Synopsis/Details
Garrison Dumont, a private eye in New Orleans with tastes for jazz, marijuana, and martial arts, is conducting business as usual. After settling his latest account, he goes for lunch at a local diner owned by his friend (and dealer) Desmond 'Dizzy' [surname]. When he returns to his office, Garrison finds Bobby, a local detective and occasional colleague, waiting for him. Bobby recruits Garrison to assist on a strange new case.
Bobby and Garrison go to the medical examiner's office and meet with Candy, the overworked medical examiner. After examining the latest victim in the case, Candy presents the theory that someone is developing a 'zombie drug' for nefarious purposes. Garrison and Bobby, though skeptical, decide to pursue the lead. Bobby returns to his precinct to continue research, and Garrison goes to The Ramblin' Man, a local nightclub. There, Garrison watches his girlfriend Jamie perform as a jazz singer, singing one of his favorites. After the show, Garrison gets a call from Bobby, who informs him of a new crime scene.
Garrison goes to the crime scene to meet Bobby, and sees the damage that the 'zombies' are capable of. With no new leads, they part ways and Garrison returns home, where he practices his martial arts to relax.
The next day, Garrison and Bobby return to Candy's office, who not only confirms that the crimes are connected, but on a scale that might warrant federal involvement. Bobby leaves, and Garrison offers a sleep-deprived Candy a ride home. On the way, Garrison and Candy witness three 'zombies' attack cars (including Garrison's) at an intersection. Garrison tries to fight them off, and gets injured. First responders soon arrive and dispatch the 'zombies'. After getting patched up, Garrison goes to Jamie's house and they talk about the case.
The following day, Garrison gets an urgent, but confusing, voicemail from Bobby and goes to the precinct. Bobby is nowhere to be found, but Garrison meets FBI agent Rick Harper, who joins him on the investigation. Garrison and Harper follow a note on Bobby's desk to a local occult shop. There, they consult the owner- Dr. Marie Court, an anthropologist, vodou priestess, and expert on Caribbean folk religions. She points them towards a crew operating out of a waterfront warehouse.
Garrison and Harper go to the warehouse to investigate, and find evidence of a working drug lab. While they spy on the warehouse, Harper is captured. Garrison breaks in and fights the thugs. As he fights, several thugs begin clearing out evidence, and one of them shoots Harper. Garrison tends to Harper and calls for an ambulance while the remaining thugs escape.
After dropping Harper and the wounded thugs at the hospital, Garrison goes back to Dizzy's for dinner and a fresh supply. He is joined by Bobby, revealed to have been on a stakeout. They compare their information and conclude that the leads point to Sam D. Barron, a prominent local businessman pushing for gentrification.
Garrison and Bobby go to Barron's new nightclub to question Barron. Barron dodges their questions, but Garrison recognizes one of his bodyguards as the thug who shot Harper (nicknaming him 'Chuckles'). Barron, sensing their intentions, threatens Garrison and dismisses the investigators from his office.
Garrison returns home and tries to relax with martial arts forms, but fails. He receives a call from Candy who provides new evidence, but she ends the call abruptly. Sensing trouble, Garrison calls Bobby but gets no response. He calls Jamie, and instead of Jamie, a mysterious voice answers and threatens him. Garrison's doorbell rings, and he finds a package containing Bobby's badge, a menu from Dizzy's, and the key to Jamie's car.
Enraged, Garrison returns to the warehouse, where he finds Bobby, Jamie, and Dizzy being held captive by Chuckles. Garrison and Chuckles begin to fight. When Garrison gains the upper hand, Chuckles injects himself with the zombie drug and attacks again. Garrison is saved by Jamie, who had freed herself with a bobby pin. Seizing the upper hand, Garrison stabs Chuckles in the eye with the car key and pushes him into the water.
Once everyone is freed, they look for remaining evidence and find a mountain of it in Chuckles' car. With all the evidence they need, Bobby calls in the police and the group returns to the nightclub.
Once at the nightclub, Garrison and company work on clearing out civilians before law enforcement arrives. Barron catches them and unleashes a dozen 'zombies' to kill the intruders. Jamie, Dizzy, and Bobby fend off the 'zombies' while Garrison confront Barron. Garrison and Barron fight brutally, with Garrison taking the worst of it. Just as Barron is about finish Garrison off, a SWAT team arrives and apprehends Barron.
In the aftermath, Garrison is being loaded into an ambulance when he proposes to Jamie, who accepts.
Several weeks later, the group reconvenes at Dizzy's. They are joined by Candy, her wife Laura, and their newborn twins. They settle in for a pleasant meal with each other's company.
