Series A small town is filled with dark secrets. Various groups have existed uneasily based on unspoken treaties. Then the richest man in town dies and in an act of revenge leaves his estate to his idealistic nephew with no idea of the family legacy. As the new business leader focuses on the community instead of hiding secrets he doesn't know about, they start to surface, agitating generational conflicts. The secret-keepers are zealots determined to keep the secrets buried and the community under control. The coven has been quietly rebelling against the zealots for decades. The disruption gives them an advantage for the first time. As the chaos settles, pieces of a dark prophesy fall into place. It's the reason the community was founded. Preventing it drove the secret-keepers to extremes. The only hope is a power available to lovers from different sides of the conflict who have the potential to combine their family legacies and take a stand. But the price for salvation is not something anyone would be willing to pay. Pilot A bolt of lightning disrupts powerful magic, allowing access to a dark legacy. No longer blocked from power, one of the afflicted frees himself and another from their prison. Allowing them to return to a community that hope they're dead. Nick, a novelist, inherited most of the town's economy and dark secrets. His relationship with Laura, the police chief, and Leo, the mayor, drag them into a generations-old conflict that none of them know about. The afflicted reveals himself to the councilman by stealing artifacts. Afraid, he calls for help. His associate assesses the damage and assures the councilman it will be dealt with. But they disagree on what needs to be done. Driving home, Nick finds Evie, a friend's sister that's been missing for eight years. She's dissociated and wandering toward town. Leading him and Laura to find the prison where Evie was held. They conclude Nick's uncle knew and makes them question oddities in his inheritance. After receiving a call from the councilman, Leo questions the older man's interest in Evie's situation. He calls Harriet, his grandmother, for information. She later discusses Evie with an associate and concludes she needs to be relocated from the clinic because of the problems she's causing. Laura and Leo discuss Evie with her doctor, learning she was subjected to medical experimentation for unknown reason. What she went through limits tests to determine the extent. Her mother's insistence that she has to be committed shows fear and an understanding of why Evie disappeared. Her questionable missing person reports and irrational responses to her return lead Laura to suspect a religious explanation. The councilman's attempt to remove Nick ,and resolve the inheritance problem, results in a confusing murder near his house. Investigating it leads to a lot more questions. The afflicted defense of Nick suggests that his uncle made a deal with the devil. The councilman's reaction to the death, and Nick's uncle's motivation, indicates he has blinders. An attack on Evie the next morning adds to the growing list of questions. The clinic has unexplained damage. She's missing. The councilman's expects updates. Laura confronts the councilman's associate and tells him that the crime wave needs to stop. Discussing the investigation with the doctor, they conclude that without Evie, they can't prove anything happened. All the medical evidence has been stolen. While there is evidence in the prison suggesting it's connected to the city, they don't expect it to hold up. Laura concludes they need to collect evidence at the prison and hide it. Harriet helps Evie escape and gives her a safe place to hide. Except the councilman's people track her there. They attempt to use the magic designed to keep Evie from causing damage against her. She destroys the cabin, from inside it, to escape the fire. The fire chief tells Laura the explosion was scientifically impossible.
