Synopsis/Details
In 1947 a 'flying saucer' crashed near Roswell in the New Mexico desert. Whilst the world's press focussed their attention on this momentous event another UFO crash had occurred some six years earlier in Cape Giradeau, Missouri that went almost unnoticed ............ and then in the wilds of the Scottish Highlands, on the Isle of Skye, in 1947 an identical 'craft' came down. It was badly damaged, but it revealed far more than its New Mexico or Missouri counterparts. More importantly, there was only one witness to this crash which happened just after midnight on a dark and stormy night.
As luck or perhaps providence would have it, the crash occurred only a few miles from a lonely, isolated house which was being rented by Professor Ian Rydell, a noted British scientist specialising in atomic research - hence the need for an isolated location for his work.
Disturbed by the 'explosion', the Professor goes to investigate, tramping across the boggy Scottish moor land to the crash site. He not only discovers the remains of a crashed saucer but also a sealed container, the size of an attaché case, that has been thrown clear of the wreckage. He takes possession of this seconds before the wrecked saucer explodes, momentarily stunning him. When he recovers his senses, there is nothing left to indicate anything had crashed save for a smoking crater in the moor land.
Over the next thirty years Professor Rydell continues his quest to translate the strange documents he finds within the alien container. They are written in a strange language which in itself takes him years to decipher. All the while, he monitors UFO sightings from around the world. Eventually, the documents give up their secrets when Rydell and his son find the 'Rosetta Stone' - crop circles!
The flying saucers being witnessed by people all over the world are in fact scout ships from a huge armada that is heading towards Earth with just one purpose, hunger! The aliens 'seeded' Mankind thousands of years ago for just one reason - food. The aliens, The Krillians, feed on humans.
There is one glimmer of hope. The scout ships were sent out way in advance of the main battle fleet with the aim of gathering information about the population of Earth. The invading armada will not arrive until 2030. It is also discovered that the craft that crashed in Missouri, Roswell and on the Isle of Skye were in fact being piloted by Krillian traitors who were trying to warn the human race. However, their inexperience in flying the saucers caused them to crash without being able to deliver their warning.
Once, Professor Ian Rydell has deciphered all the alien documents and learned of their plans, he approaches the authorities. His renown as an atomic scientist guarantees that his discovery is taken seriously. A team of experts is assembled with the goal of devising a defence plan to defend the Earth.
A Special Ops team is established with the remit to investigate all "flying saucer" sightings around the world in the hope that more information will be discovered.
The alien battle plan focuses on attacking the main cities in all the countries of the world as this is where the greatest concentration of 'food' will be. This leads to the drawing up of an audacious plan - each city will be developed into a transforming fortress with enough fire power to defend itself.
This series will concentrate on LONDON which will not only be the first city to be fortified but will also be the control and command centre for the entire world. However, the potential exists for international versions of the series concentrating on key cities in different countries.
Naturally, to prevent a breakout of mass panic, everything must be shrouded in secrecy. Whilst the population of London go about their daily lives the LEAGUE OF NATIONS DEFENCE OPERATING NETWORK is being constructed.
Major city buildings and landmarks are being 'converted', 'Transformers' style to perform another purpose. For example:
BIG BEN - hides the doomsday missile - a weapon of last resort.
Beneath the HOUSE OF COMMONS lies the central command centre for this weapon under the control of the one person who can 'press the button', the Prime Minister.
ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL - The dome of St Paul's is a giant radio telescope deep space tracking system.
THE TELECOM TOWER - The top portion is a rotating gun turret with massive fire power.
All the buildings and landmarks that make up the Defence Network are connected by a series of underground travel ways. These are not the actual London Underground Tube railways but a brand new network using magnetic levitation as a power source for the travel cars.
Although the operation is shrouded in secrecy, it would be impossible for the general populace not to notice a building splitting open to reveal a rocket launcher or the London Eye converting into a massive Gatling gun! Therefore, a special ministry department is formed with the sole purpose of 'covering up' incidents like the dome of St Paul's Cathedral seeming to revolve, by fabricating plausible cover stories such as, "it was a minor earthquake" or "something in the drinking water". This department would add 'comedy value' to the series as their cover stories become ever more ludicrous!
The first episode illustrates the setup of the Defence Network, starting with the 1941 saucer crash in Missouri and then the development of the city fortress. Each subsequent episode will focus on a specific Krillian threat and how one or more of the defence landmarks combats it. The last, feature length episode, will show the massive battle that ensues around the world when the Krillian armada eventually arrives.
The first episode will introduce not only Professor Ian Rydell, but also his son Rupert, and his great grandson, Philip, all of whom are involved with the Project, and Charlie, a 12 year old gifted female student.
In the first story, Philip Rydell is showing Charlie the sights of London. Of course, Charlie is totally unaware of what lies hidden behind or within some of the places she is visiting.
They are sitting on opposite sides of the 'whispering gallery' in St Paul's Cathedral and Philip is demonstrating how a whisper can carry all around the dome. Suddenly, they hear a far off explosion. Philip is immediately alert and realises something is up. Charlie notices a number of hooded figures appear who she refers to as 'mysterious clergymen'. They are wearing religious robes with hoods hiding their heads. They appear to be chanting but Charlie, being a bit of a maths genius, realises that the chants are actually spatial co-ordinates. At the same time, she hears a low rumbling sound and notices that the dome of the cathedral is revolving very slowly. Peering upwards she also notices that the ceiling of the dome is showing a starfield ....... just what is going on?
So, Charlie becomes involved with L.O.N.D.O.N. and so starts the adventure.
