AMANDA and STEVE have been together since college… and Amanda has had enough! She works hard to pay the bills in a job she hates, while he – a lazy, hypochondriac - stays home and plays computer games. Amanda writes Steve a break-up letter, but her plan to “uncouple” from him is interrupted when an extreme, flu-like virus starts incapacitating the entire male population of the planet. All, that is, save Steve - who turns out to be immune to the “man-flu”. And so, Amanda suddenly finds herself with the fittest boyfriend on Earth!
Amanda confides in her best friend SAM, swearing her to secrecy. Soon every woman in London knows about Steve, and the couple are forced to go on the run. They decide to head for Edinburgh where Steve’s ex-fiancé - a successful immunologist - may be able to create an antivirus from a sample of Steve’s blood. Whilst most women are unaffected by the virus, a small percentage display elevated testosterone levels and high levels of aggression - so, with Steve disguised as a woman, the couple flee London, amidst wide-spread looting.
Two other women keen to get their hands on Steve are the Prime Minister, MARGARET MAUL, and Hello There! magazine’s editor, and global media mogul, JERI MAXWELL. Maul instructs the army to hunt for Steve, while Maxwell puts together her own team of manhunters, including a ruthless big-game hunter. Amanda and Steve are forced to abandon their car at a roadblock and hitch a ride with a nice group of women in a campervan. But the women turn out to be members of W.A.R.P. – Women Against the Return of the Patriarchy and the couple are forced to flee, pursued by heavily armed W.A.R.P. members.
With men all over the world taking a collective sick day, life has in some ways got worse for women, but in many ways it has got much, much better. But as Amanda is forced to stand by her man to protect him from the various factors who want to get their hands on him, she and Steve rediscover the friendship they once had. Finally, they evade their enemies and reach Edinburgh. The path is clear for them to save the male species. But will the new world be a patriarchy, a matriarchy, or something else? And what form will Amanda and Steve’s relationship take now?
MANDEMIC! is an action-comedy in the spirit of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, SHOTGUN, WEDDING and THE LOST ISLAND, that would appeal to an adult male and female audience. In a world that is becoming increasingly fractured, it asks the question: what would it take for humanity to stop acting like we’re all members of warring tribes and remember that we’re essentially just one big dysfunctional family.
