Synopsis/Details
Skylar Daniels and Marcos Villalobos are two 18-year old buddies from Laguna Clemente, California. They have run away from home after coming out as gay to their wealthy but closed-minded and controlling families. Using Marcos’ father’s yacht as a getaway vehicle, the boys set out for a new life at sea. However, it becomes immediately clear that the boys have not thought this through.
Before Marcos can adequately campaign to turn around, Skylar’s Grindr app intercepts a nearby “Flippr” account. The boys are astonished to be greeted by a cute and playful “mergay” named Seth. The handsome fish-man is turned unwitting savior when the boat sinks, leaving our human protagonists no choice but to visit an undersea world of shimmering reef cities and never-ending tail.
After convincing the adventuresome Skylar--who then convinces the ever-cautious Marcos--to huff dolphin air (used on sea mammals during anesthesia), Seth leads the way as they evade a pistol-shrimp policeman in a whale shark’s mouth to meet the mergay squad. They arrive at the bachelor pad of Seth's best friend, Koi, who is immediately attracted to Skylar and his vibrant spirit. Their friends Philippe and Ezra peace out to avoid legal culpability, but Seth and Koi feel compelled to save the boys when the dolphin air runs low. Following the advice of their “merbian” pal, Chevelle, they go to see Dr. Vasiliki--a siren MD with a penchant for alternative medicines--who cooks up an old solution that allows human lungs to function underwater for a fortnight. When it doesn’t kill them, Skylar and Marcos are then made custom fins by the doctor's partner and "Drag Superstar of the Pacific," Tobias.
We leave the mergays excited for a series of coming adventures with their new pals, the "merfakes." Little do they all know, however, that "Queen Bee of the Mergays" and our Season 1 villain, Eric Chandler, is watching them closely and with the utmost suspicion of these curious interlopers. We end the pilot back on land where Skylar's and Marcos' parents are furious over the missing yacht, and vow to find their sons as well.
