After shadow-creatures known as the Murmurmen collapse civilization by whispering victims into the dark, a violent ex-con named Castor Hess—uniquely immune to their call—is tasked with guiding a fragile group of survivors toward a rumored sanctuary in Fort Worth. As Castor battles not only the creatures but the mistrust of those around him, he’s forced to confront the sins of his past and the question of whether a man like him deserves to lead anyone to safety.
