“You will meet a tall, dark stranger… inherit a small fortune… step onto a new land…”
The promise of better times to come, predictions from fortune tellers or psychics can provide hope when things feel hopeless. And for perpetually single, SUMMER, 31, who dreams of finding Mr. Right in a world of Mr. Wrongs, hope for a happily ever after couldn’t come soon enough. Summer’s life is exactly where she wants it to be, an elementary school teacher, with her own apartment and a handful of close gal pals including LYDIA, 30’s, Summer’s no-nonsense and newly engaged BFF. The only thing missing in Summer’s life is a relationship. When she has a psychic reading and she’s told she will soon meet the man that she will marry, Summer is excited and relived. As a true believer in the power of tarot cards and tea leaves, she is convinced that her single days are finally numbered. Now all she has to do is find the man that the psychic described.
When Summer goes on a date with JAMES, 34, a cocky app developer, she knows right away he’s not the one. It’s one of those dates that’s over before it starts. The kind where you have one drink and bail, or maybe you don’t even finish the drink. But before the two can part ways, James gets news that his long-time friend, BEN, has died, and suddenly the date takes a turn. James decides to stay because he’s grieving, finding comfort in Summer. And Summer starts to believe that James is “the one.”
Now, the morning after their first date, and each motivated by grief and the promise of love, Summer and James - who are clearly not compatible - spend the day together. Things will start off a little awkward, as most mornings after a one-night stand are. And Summer will have to bail on important bridesmaid plans with Lydia, causing friction in her friendship. But the day will finally start to go her way when Summer helps James with his memorial speech. Leading James to invite her to Ben’s memorial as his guest. Things will quickly get complicated when PRESLEY, 29, James’s glamorous, new age, ex-girlfriend shows up at Summer’s apartment to console her ex-lover. Despite the fact that all signs are pointing to “he’s not the one” Summer just can’t shake the idea that he’s the man from her psychic reading, and not wanting to have any regrets, she decides to see things through and go to the memorial.
James probably shouldn’t have invited Summer, and she probably shouldn’t have shown up, but love and grief make us do crazy things, things we normally won’t do.
