Synopsis/Details
The year is 2061. Mysterious wormholes emerged all across the planet's surface and are about to destroy the world. When all attempts to seal them fail, Derek, the lead scientist of Project Endolon, an international organization founded to fight the crisis, decides to travel through one of the wormholes in order to find their cause on the other side. When he emerges on the other end, he has traveled back to Geneva, Switzerland in the year 2015. CERN's large hadron collider has just had a major accident that results in mass casualties and the creation of the wormholes. Knocked out by the disaster, Derek ends up in a nearby hospital where he learns from his Doctor, Emma, that U.S. authorities have been invited to assist the investigation of the CERN incident because an emblem of a military base in Alabama was found on his time traveling suit. Two FBI agents, Carl and Jessica arrive and interview Derek. While Jessica, who has an educational background in physics, tends to believe Derek, Carl is convinced Derek is a terrorist who had a role in the accident. Meanwhile, one of the wormholes emerges in the Hudson River and threatens to gobble up the Indian Point nuclear power plant. It is the first of several that were created in the CERN incident and have caused Derek to travel back in time. Derek convinces Jessica to give him back his special anti-gravity suit and let him try to seal the wormhole. His mission is partly successful. Back in 2061, one of the wormholes begins to disappear. While the people in the Project Endolon HQ are celebrating Derek's success, a hover tank attacks the laboratory and kills many scientists. To be continued…

JUDGE'S PERSONAL COMMENTS:

The screenplay has an excellent setup and resolution. Derek enters the wormhole vortex in his futuristic suit to try and avert global disaster. In the end, he successfully accomplishes his goal. However, Derek is not completely successful so that future episodes may introduce new challenges to face. The story also has some interesting twists as we learn that the wormhole leads through time. The phenomenon is effecting multiple timelines and so the conflict will apparently unfold across history. Derek is well developed as a strong, active protagonist, with a clear and immediate goal. The high stakes situation with the wormhole pushes Derek to take decisive action, as he is the most qualified person to operate the suit and figure out how to stop the phenomenon. This is an excellent setup on the hero and the ending is great!
The dialogue does a pretty good job of introducing the characters and setting up this world. There is excellent commercial potential in this screenplay. This is a high-stakes science-fiction adventure. Although this pilot works as a satisfying stand-alone episode, it also sets up the elements which could launch the series. A few clichéd moments stick out like a sore thumb in a script which is otherwise polished, exciting, and original. Overall this is a highly entertaining screenplay which is already strong enough to warrant a consideration. Nice job!
