Synopsis/Details
A young girl, EVA LANDHOW (about 12) is forced to move to the Scottish countryside because her father, TOM LANDHOW (late 30's) takes a new job. Eva's mother, AMENIA LANDHOW (mid 30s) tries to be supportive. Eva is distraught about leaving all of her friends behind, but as she arrives at their new home a sense of wonder washes over her. The home is an old rustic farmhouse full of character and history, a large tower pokes out from the building. Eva hears a faint voice on the wind.
A few of the locals, ANGUS (mid-50s), DOUGALL (mid 40s), and MCKENZIE-the Inn owner (mid 60s), gather in the local Inn and talk about how long its been since they've had any snow up in the north. Angus has been hired by Tom's company to show Tom around, but the others know that Angus didnt give them the new family the whole story.
Eva forgets her sadness about being alone as she explores the new home. She has trouble sleeping and discovers a secret passage to the tower hidden in the pantry. She ignores her father’s warning and goes up to the tower. She finds a child’s room at the top that has been abandoned for some time. There’s an old bear with “Harry” written on the tag. Eva sees a pale boy, HARRY (15) in the garden and writing starts to appear by itself on the window: HELP US. Eva screams and runs from the tower.
Confronted by her parents about disobeying the rules, Eva is punished. Tom calls Angus to come and board up the tower. Angus reminds Eva how dangerous the tower is. Eva asks Angus if she can keep Harry’s bear before he boards up the tower, Angus is aghast that she knows of Harry at all.
Eva goes out to pick some berries and is confronted by Harry, the boy from the garden. He introduces himself and begs Eva to help him find a lost girl named Snow, missing in the hills. Harry reveals that hes been looking for Snow for quite some time, her father BOREAS asked him to help look for her.
Harry explains that Boreas is really an ancient soul known better as Jack Frost, and that Snow is his daughter. Snow makes the actual snowflakes that fall during winter, but she has become trapped in this world and her power is waning. If she is not saved, it will never snow again.
Eva and Harry search the countryside and find an old stone wall. Fog rolls in from the hills as they search and find a gate that leads to a courtyard where there is a church and a cemetery. Eva can enter the church yard, but Harry cant. She is on her own, except for a ghost voice (Boreas) that encourages her. Eva falls down a flight of steps and crashes into an old iron gate.
Amenia realizes that Eva is missing and calls Tom. Tom tries to calm her and calls Angus. Angus wastes no time and gathers a group of locals from the Inn to help search. The townsfolk search the field and come across the stone wall surrounding the church. Tom gets separated from the others inside the church yard and stumbles around the cemetery. Angus finds him and tells him that they found Eva. She’s okay and they bring her home.
Angus finally explains to Tom that the house they are in was vacated after a boy, Harry Campbell wandered off in a snow storm. And before Harry another girl about Eva’s age was wandering the hills calling for Snow. Eva reveals that she knows that Harry died, sitting under the tree atop the hill.
The family goes into town to get some supplies for Christmas dinner. Eva wanders off exploring the shops. Near the edge of town she is greeted by Harry. Harry tells her that the time is almost up, and if they don’t find Snow within the next day she will die. Eva agrees to help but is called away by her mother.
On the way back to the car Eva is stopped by MRS. CAMPBELL (mid 60s) who is ranting about how Eva has been talking to her son, Harry. A crowd gathers around and ushers Mrs. Campbell back inside as Tom explains to Eva that Harry died.
Eva goes home and the family eats dinner and decorates the tree. Everyone goes off to bed.
After a while Angus, Dougall, and McKenzie get a call saying that Eva is missing again. They form a posse and head back out to find her.
Eva and Harry go back to the church yard. Eva enters the church, but Harry stays outside. As Eva explores she finds a faint glow coming from the bottom of the stairs she fell down earlier. She breaks the iron gate and runs inside.
Tom addresses the townsfolk gathered at the house to search for Eva. They all make preparations and head out.
Eva goes into a burial vault, pushing an old heavy door open. As she searches the room the door shuts with a bang! Startled, Eva looks around a finds SNOW, (10) hiding in the room. Eva helps Snow to the door, but the handle is stuck – they’re trapped!
The door swings open and Harry is there to greet them. Snow’s strength is failing. They hurry to get Snow outside to the courtyard. Snow can’t rejoin her father here. They have to take Snow to the hill where Harry died. Eva picks Snow up and runs away with her.
Angus, Tom, Dougall, and McKenzie examine the gate at the church. They can see that Eva was here, but that she is gone now. Angus spies two pairs of footprints in the snow, leading away toward the hills. They set out following them.
Eva, Snow, and Harry rush to the top of the hill. They have to catch the last snowflake before it falls or Snow will die. Tom and the others appear at the bottom of the hill as the last flake is falling and are there to see everything. The last glowing snowflakes falls and lands in Snow’s hand….a brilliant flash of light explodes from the hill top and then Snow appears floating in the air.
Boreas appears and is reunited with Eva. Everyone rejoices. Eva’s mother and the Campbells arrive at the hill and they see Harry. There’s an emotional reuinion and a goodbye and Harry floats up to join Snow and Boreas, they disappear from view.
The next morning Eva wakes everyone up to show them a beautiful multicolor snow fall. They learn from the TV that this snow is falling everywhere. Angus shows up at the house with the entire village and they sing and celebrate a Christmas miracle.
