Synopsis/Details
It’s 1988 in Culver City, California where Jim and Sonya Wishburn and their two children Timmy and Amy, load up the station wagon for a vacation. One minute they’re driving along, but in about an hour three of them will dead, victims of horrendous accident. Only Amy - all of seven years old - who went to pick flowers while they were stopped on a shoulder on Pacific Coast Highway, was spared as the car went speeding off the cliff and burst into flames upon impact with the ground below.
Fast forward 20 years where Amy, ex army MP, works as a head librarian. After an incident with a worker, Casey and her ex-husband, at the library where she works, Amy meets Tom Crawford, Detective for the Kingman PD. She also meets a young Deputy Sheriff, Clay Collins, who is smitten with her. These two men become very pivotal in her life going forward.
Crawford shows great interest in investigating Amy's family tragedy and starts working the case on his own time. Amy goes out with Clay a few times, meets his friends, and finds herself intrigued by this quiet, unassuming man.
One night, two armed men break into Amy’s home and tie her up in her kitchen. Only one man speaks and he tells her the inquires being made don’t sit well with their employers. They threaten to cutoff Amy’s hands if they have to see her again. They dial 911 on their way out.
Amy visits Casey at her dilapidated trailer where she finds Casey’s ex husband, Derrick, drinking with a hostile pit bull by his side. They exchange words and when Amy tries to take Casey away with her, he produces a pistol, which causes Amy to grab her firearm from her ankle holster. As Amy’s negotiating with Casey to go with her, a little boy about 3 years old, Petey, comes walking into the living room. Casey explains that Petey’ is from her previous husband. Amy leaves without Casey and her son.
Crawford goes to California to talk to the lead investigator for Ford, who wrote the report saying there was a transmission problem which caused the accident. Crawford probes too hard and is shown the door. His next stop is Supreme Studios where Amy's father used to work. He gets an audience with the VP and CFO, Crystal Smith, who knew Jim Wishburn. Another tense discussion about possible embezzlement by Wishburn, leaves Crawford with more questions than answers. He tells Crystal he suspects Wishburn may have driven off the cliff on purpose. He intimates there may be connection between Supreme Studios and Ford. He senses Crystal knows more than she lets on and asks her for help.
Amy and Clay share a meal in her house. Amy finally tells Clay she thinks her father intentionally drove off the cliff and that Crawford’s been investigating. She tells him about the intruders and what they said to her.
The sound of coffee brewing is disturbed by a rifle shot through the patio door glass and into Clay’s head. Clays drops dead into Amy’s arms. She lays Clay’s body down and fires his revolver into the dark backyard.
A few days later, Crawford reveals details he found out from a call from Crystal: Wishburn fathered one of Crystal’s kids; Crystal wouldn’t get an abortion and blackmailed Amy’s father; he had to steal the money from Supreme but Crystal did not receive anything. Crawford also believes Ford dummied up reports in exchange for being used in Supreme film projects. He also thinks Crystal tipped off Amy’s father he was going to be let go after his vacation.
Amy attends Clay's wake. Crawford catches the two men responsible. Amy confronts Crystal at her house and meets her half sister.
She skydives off the cliff with Petey, who she is now watching, coming down where her family's souls came to rest, and where she can finally get some measure of closure.
