Wealthy eccentric James Holden discovers a means of trapping human souls within a given area after they have died. In order to test his theory, James convinces three drug-addicted individuals to commit suicide in return for a large sum of money that will be delivered to their surviving family members. Larry Olson, his new research assistant, accompanies James and the others to the Louisiana swamps where this experiment is to take place. Larry abandons the experiment before it is complete, only to discover that everyone was killed that day in the swamps, not just the intended research subjects. Larry hides himself away and takes an internet sales job, as he struggles with guilt over the fact that he was ever involved with the experiment.
Larry is later approached by a group of college students who want to travel to the Cajun village of Soul Crossing, which was the site of the murders. It is their intention to write an article about the murders for their student newspaper. Larry initially declines the opportunity to return to Soul Crossing. He changes his mind however, and decides to accompany them out of respect for their determination and out of his concern for their safety.
This concern turns out to be well founded, when they all discover that the spirits of the initial expedition to Soul Crossing still inhabit the swamps. James’ experiments lead to far more than he ever bargained for, turning the spirits of all who have died there evil and making them powerful enough to take human life. Larry and his companions must now fight for survival in Soul Crossing as they unravel the mystery of what happened there years before. Larry must do his best to get them all out alive and put a stop what has gone wrong in Soul Crossing. In so doing, he has a chance to find his own sense of redemption if he can end the nightmare he helped create.
This script was a Semifinalist in Shriekfest LA. After that, I rewrote it based on notes received from a development executive at a company known for producing horror films.
