Synopsis/Details
The year, 1980 This TV pilot, set in 1979 and 1980, centers on Young John, an exceptionally talented boy treble at The Choral Academy. He's navigating the complexities of adolescence, his burgeoning musical aspirations, and the emotional fallout of a past accident that resulted in his castration. His mother, deeply concerned for his health and future, clashes with him over his desire to discontinue hormone treatment, a decision influenced by his longing to preserve his voice to become a castrato singer. The year, 1979 The pilot explores the dynamics within Young John's family, including his strained relationship with his older brother, Teenaged Justice, who struggles with his own sexual identity and societal pressures. Teenaged Justice attempts to "toughen up" Young John, a misguided effort that ultimately leads to tragedy. Outside the family, the story introduces Pinkie, a young woman working at the Choral Academy whom Young John's desperately falls in love with. Pinkie's family life is fraught with tension, particularly due to the predatory behavior of Gunner, her stepfather. The pilot also hints at the volatile nature of Dingo, Pinkie's brother, whose efforts to get noticed by Gunner usually fails. Brandon, Gunner's blood son, is Teenaged Justice's love interest. The narrative weaves together themes of music, family, identity, and abuse. Young John's passion for singing and his dreams of musical greatness are juxtaposed with the harsh realities of his physical condition and the emotional scars it has left. The pilot culminates in a devastating accident during a horseback riding lesson, orchestrated by Teenaged Justice, leaving Young John severely injured and his future uncertain. The accident underscores the fragility of Young John's situation and the potential consequences of the choices he and his family are making.

The Writer: Pieter van der Westhuizen

From Inner Mongolian snowstorms to African tick-bite fever, life has been the unlikely catalyst for my screenwriting odyssey. For ten years, I've been crafting stories, initially as a hobby to combat boredom during a week-long lockdown in Inner Mongolia during a blizzard. That first screenplay sparked a passion, leading to five completed scripts, though sadly, three vanished into the digital abyss, leaving me momentarily disheartened. But as they say, the writing bug bites hard, and mine returned with a vengeance – quite literally – while recovering from tick-bite fever after a hike in the African bush. My heart belongs to sci-fi (one of the dearly departed scripts!), but I've also explored… Go to bio
