It's been a life of bullying and family tragedy for Deputy Sam, but he believes he's finally found his calling. Thanks largely to Sheriff Avon Brimmel, a mentor and, more importantly, a father figure to Sam.
This makes it all the more traumatic when the Sheriff dies on Sam's birthday after wrapping his cruiser around a tree in the middle of the night.
Alone and devastated, Sam finds himself being bullied, pushed and pulled in many directions by local business owner Tremont Tremaine and the town's priest, Father Janis.
They bully Sam into applying for the now vacant Sheriff's position - something he doesn't feel he's ready for or earned, in order to keep him in the dark and ineffective as they ramp up their secret drug operation out of the town's church.
If all this isn't enough to deal with, Sam learns that Frankie Dathers is back in town. A man who should be in jail. A man who shares a past with Sam. A man whose very name struck fear in Sam's heart.
As his life begins to spiral out of control and Sam nears his breaking point, he begins to suspect that the Sheriff's death was no accident.
With the help of his newfound love, Sophia - also living under the yoke of a bully, Sam strikes back against the town and the family that has betrayed him, and, when Sophia is kidnaped in order to keep him in line, Sam vows to tear down everything these corrupt men have built and make the Sheriff proud.
