Synopsis
Clara Jones, a sharp and determined Irish-American lawyer in her 30s, is struggling to balance her professional life with the responsibilities of being a single mother to her six-year-old daughter, Katie. Financially strained and emotionally exhausted, Clara accepts a high-stakes case involving the mysterious disappearance of Luzie Rose, a 24-year-old woman who vanished under suspicious circumstances. The case is complicated, with little evidence and no leads, but Clara’s tenacity drives her to pursue justice for Luzie's distraught parents, Peter and Donah Valerie.
The story opens with a chilling scene in which two drug dealers, Dale and Benny, are haunted by an unseen entity shortly after completing a drug deal. The haunting ends in their gruesome deaths, marked by the mysterious presence of cement-like water in their bodies. This eerie incident sets the tone for the supernatural elements that permeate the narrative.
Meanwhile, Clara and Katie move into a new penthouse apartment following an eviction from their previous home. The apartment, however, is far from the fresh start Clara had hoped for. Almost immediately, strange occurrences begin to plague their lives. Katie starts seeing a ghostly figure—a black-coated woman with long, obscuring hair—whom she refers to as “Spooky.” Initially dismissing her daughter’s claims as childish imagination, Clara soon begins to experience the hauntings herself. The figure, with her terrifying presence, becomes a constant, malevolent force in their lives.
Clara’s investigation into Luzie Rose’s disappearance uncovers connections to the criminal underworld, specifically to Louis Francino, a powerful drug lord, and his son Tyrone. As Clara digs deeper, she faces increasing threats and intimidation from the Francino family, who want her to drop the case. The threats become personal when Clara receives photographs of her daughter taken by Francino’s men, signaling that they are being watched.
The tension between Clara and her ex-husband, Rixom McMoore, an FBI agent, adds another layer of complexity to the story. Rixom is assigned to investigate the bizarre deaths of Dale, Benny, and a third man, Tony, all of whom were killed in a similar manner—drowned in cement-like water. Rixom and his partner, Wilson Anderson, are baffled by the supernatural elements surrounding these cases but remain focused on finding the culprits. Rixom’s involvement in the case brings him back into Clara’s life, rekindling unresolved feelings between them. He still loves Clara and wants to be a part of Katie’s life, but their past differences, particularly regarding gender roles and equality, stand as obstacles to reconciliation.
As Clara continues her legal battle, she learns that Luzie Rose’s case is far more sinister than she initially thought. Luzie was not just a victim but a key figure who knew too much about the criminal activities of the Francino family, including human trafficking and illegal drug operations. Luzie’s disappearance was orchestrated to silence her, and her ghostly presence is a manifestation of her unresolved anger and despair.
The supernatural occurrences in Clara’s apartment intensify, with the ghostly figure becoming more aggressive. Clara realizes that the hauntings are directly linked to Luzie’s case. The apartment, it seems, is a focal point for the spirit’s vengeance. Clara’s psychic neighbor, Mary, who lost her son, John Baker, an undercover FBI agent investigating Luzie’s case, becomes an unexpected ally. Together, they try to piece together the mystery, but the more they uncover, the more dangerous their situation becomes.
In a climactic series of events, Clara confronts the Francino family, armed with evidence that ties them to Luzie’s disappearance and the murders of Dale, Benny, and Tony. The supernatural elements reach a fever pitch as Luzie’s ghost appears to aid Clara in exposing the truth. The ghost’s presence is both terrifying and tragic, embodying the injustice and horror that Luzie endured.
With Rixom’s help, Clara brings the Francino family to justice, but not without paying a heavy emotional price. The case forces Clara to confront her own demons, including her feelings for Rixom and the challenges of raising Katie in a world filled with darkness. The story concludes with Clara finding a semblance of peace as she moves forward, having secured justice for Luzie and a safer future for her daughter.
