Synopsis/Details
The story is about ROBERT FORTUNE, a Scottish botanist, plant hunter, and adventurer. In 1848, he is commissioned by the East India Company to steal the secret of tea from China. Fortune disguises himself as a Chinese merchant and travels to areas that are forbidden to foreigners with his servants. He collects tea seeds and plants and finds a way to transport them to India. The Chinese authorities launch an investigation into Fortune. Fortune eludes capture and leaves the country with a skilled team of Chinese workmen. When he reaches India, he is shocked to learn that the plants are dead due to inappropriate irrigation methods. Fortune must overcome obstacles to achieve successful tea production and stop the flow of silver out of Britain to pay for Chinese tea.
