Synopsis/Details
I know you want to find a great script. If you like the poster for Those Who Know then you're bound to have fun with this read.
Voted “Best Screenplay” in Vancouver and Burbank, The Black List wrote “Those Who Know is a heartfelt story about sacrifice, heroism, and sasquatches, and it’s got some great set pieces (particularly the climax) and an interesting message of conservation.”
Barry’s a hero but was forced out of the U.S. Army on bogus charges. Disillusioned with society, he lives alone in the woods. His pension is so low he’s forced to make ends meet by hunting for food. One day, after bagging a 12-point buck, he finds out he wasn’t the only being hunting the deer.
EXCERPT:
HEAVY FOOTSTEPS and BREAKING BRANCHES get LOUDER. Something’s coming. Something huge. The buck’s only a few feet from the tree line and Barry’s just a few feet beyond that.
A towering black mass seems to coalesce out of nothing. It becomes a solid shape eight feet tall just a few feet from Barry. Thick black and gray hair covers its simian body. Its head is connected to its tremendous shoulders with no apparent neck.
The creature has small ears, a vaguely human face with gray skin, huge mouth with dark lips, and brown, intelligent eyes. It stares at Barry. Then it quietly GROWLS, lips parting to reveal almost human teeth. Barry’s standing with his 30-06 rifle held loosely in his hands. The creature stares at him then raises its eyebrows as though asking a silent question.
Barry’s hardly breathing. The creature looks down at Barry’s rifle, then up again as it looks into Barry’s eyes. Barry looks down at his rifle as though seeing for the first time. He looks back at the creature and then very slowly sets his rifle flat on the ground.
The creature GRUNTS in acknowledgment. Then, with muscles rippling visibly under its fur, it grasps the huge buck and lifts it off the ground, holding the 250-pound deer at arm’s length. It stares at Barry as it hoists the deer to eye level.
Barry watches the big buck lifted into the air. His mouth drops open again. Then, in a single motion, the Sasquatch...RIPS it in half.
Barry stumbles two steps backwards. The Sasquatch SNORTS, seeming to almost chuckle, and tosses half the buck at Barry’s feet. It SNORTS again and then, seeming to virtually dematerialize, it’s gone. Along with its half of the deer.
NOTE: This starts an amazing friendship that changes Barry’s life forever. It could also save an entire species from extinction…or destroy the last of them.
Barry is joined by June Benson, a widow, and Bob Santos, a small town sheriff, who team up to protect a Sasquatch family.
The Academy Nicholl Fellowships wrote: “Those Who Know is intense and heartfelt.”
I hope you'll take a look.
