Stage Play "Three Ladies of Orpington" by Daniel Guyton
Synopsis/Details
Henrietta, Maude, and Elenore are three high-borne women in the town of Orpington (a small suburb of London known for its poultry of the same name) during the Victorian Era. All the men in the family have now passed away, and the women are in an increasingly desperate situation, as they cannot find where Grandfather Benedict kept the family's money. Because of the time period, the women cannot easily find work, and the debts are piling up. Furthering the stakes, Maude is elderly and possibly senile, Henrietta is middle-aged and joyless, and young Elenore has a facial deformity which limits her marriage prospects. Because of their financial situation, all the servants have been let go. Small tasks like making supper are nearly beyond their privileged capabilities. Unless they can find a solution soon, they will have to sell the estate and perhaps be homeless. Suddenly, a handsome noble named Marvin Babcock appears at the home. He takes an interest in Elenore that gives the ladies hope that their estate may be saved. However, things are not as they seem, as Mr. Babcock begins taking more and more liberties within the household, and soon usurps Henrietta's authority in a patriarchal display of dominance. What the ladies failed to realize until it is too late, is that they have unwittingly allowed a fox into their henhouse.
