Synopsis/Details
Following a disastrous spell with drugs and alcohol, which resulted in losing his job and splitting with his wife, Wesley “Wes” Stephens moves to a sleepy town in upstate New York, to collect himself and restart his life. He has given up the prestige and wealth of his life in NYC, and settled in a dilapidated farmhouse a few miles out of the small town.
After a few months, his gregarious nature finds him building friendships and a reputation around town. In fact, his penchant for parties and gatherings around the smallest event in town has made him a bit of a celebrity, along with his obsession with driving his red Porsche, the only leftover from his previous life, much too fast.
One day a mysterious young widow, Vicky appears in town. Whenever Wes sees her he tries to remain inconspicuous but her raw beauty and grand stature make it nearly impossible. Wes becomes obsessed with her. Nobody seems to know much about her, just that she has been visiting the town for years.
Shockingly one morning at the diner as Wes eats breakfast, Vicky sits down at his booth out of nowhere. After a few awkward moments Vicky slips Wes a slip of paper with a phone number on it and leaves as abruptly as she arrived. Wes doesn’t sleep all night fidgeting with his cell phone, punching in and then deleting the number. Then his phone rings…the incoming number is Vicky’s!
A passionate affair erupts and is the start of a sexually driven, but budding relationship over the next few dates. Wes continues to research her since he gets no info from her directly about her past. Eventually he confirms she is from New York, Brooklyn in fact, and a neighborhood near where he had lived. A series of events unfolds as he finds out more and more information through snooping, stealing info, and making calls. Finally he enlists a private eye from the city, and learns her maiden name, Victoria Black, and it rings a bell but he can’t place it.
Wes can’t figure out what to do. What is her plan? Who is she really? He starts to pull back from her but she responds with anger and frustration. Wes becomes worried; he’s fallen for her but is also terrified of her. Wes finds a prescription in her bathroom, the same drug that he had become addicted too…and there is no reason for her to be taking it. Wes threatens to stop their relationship.
Pictures start showing up in his mailbox, pictures of his ex with a man, his kids at school, pictures of him back in NYC at the barber, the bank, shopping. Wes start to worry that Vicky is psychotic. Little notes too, “it’s fate” “I need you” “don’t make this hard” etc. Nothing threatening enough for legal action, though, so Wes decides to push the issue, he’s at the end of his rope. He agrees to meet her for dinner, planning to push her over the edge with a public blow-up. She looks incredible, better than ever, and irresistible. He can’t bring himself to end it, it’s too exciting, sexy, and fun.
In the morning he confronts her about the situation, accuses her of stalking him for years and for ruining his life. She is defensive but also confused. She can’t believe what she is hearing. He shows her the notes, the pictures, etc. that he’s brought with him intending to lay it all out at dinner the night before. She really doesn’t understand; it wasn’t her.
She goes back to the pictures, specifically the one of his ex with a man…that man, she recognizes him. Stephanie’s step-brother, Michael is an eccentric playboy whom she hardly got to know as kids. He works in NYC as an attorney. His office oversaw the divorce and settlement. Michael and Wes’ ex-wife had been having an affair for years; Vicky hated him for it and had always had a thing for Wes. She had only been trying to help but inadvertently helped Michael and not Wes. Someone else is trying to get at him, Michael and his ex.
Wes goes ballistic, he plans revenge on Michael. Vicky is devastated that she may have played a role, but torn because she is in love. Wes is forced to choose between his past or his future, compassion or revenge. Is Vicky worth letting it all go? Is revenge worth starting all over again?
