Synopsis/Details
"Unlucky Penny" is a delightful LGBTQ+ romantic comedy that follows the story of a photographer named Penny, who is plagued by a “curse of bad luck” bestowed upon her at birth — but buoyed by her devoted best friends, Jenae and Tyler.
When Penny falls head over heels for her stunning new neighbor, Victoria, she resolves to win Victoria's heart—but ends up weaving a tangled web of lies and pretending to be someone she's not in the process. As Penny desperately tries to impress Victoria, she also meets Julianne, the new owner of the drag bar that Penny and her friends frequent. After convincing Julianne to let her use the bar's drag queens as subjects for a photography contest that could launch her dream career, Penny and Julianne team up and an unexpected connection begins to form. The story is punctuated by a montage of scenes that juxtapose Penny's nervous-fueled lying encounters with Victoria versus her more playful and authentic experiences with Julianne.
Amid the two contrasting budding romances, Penny, Jenae, and Tyler must navigate through a series of hilariously sticky situations they find themselves in as a result of Penny’s lies to Victoria, including giving a mouse CPR, a karaoke-related concussion, and crashing the funeral of a man they accidentally kill. As Penny's lies weigh on her and threaten to derail her life altogether if she keeps them up, she must ultimately choose between Victoria and Julianne and bring the truth to light. After making her choice and finding forgiveness for the mess her lies created, Penny's curse is finally broken and she finds true love.
This heartwarming LGBTQ+ RomCom teaches us that love can come from unexpected places and that taking risks and being true to oneself can lead us to the most fulfilling life. Overall, "Unlucky Penny" is a must-read for anyone who loves romance, comedy, and drag culture, as well as the power of friendship.
