They moved from the city because Mary had a miscarriage months ago and they needed a change of setting. They are shown a the house by a realtor who sells Mary on the Widow's Walk, a long terrace where the wives of seaman out on fishing trips would stand vigil, walking back and forth, waiting for their men to return. The couple moves in and the first night Mary hears a creaking in the house and goes to investigate. She goes out onto the Widow's Walk and encounters a ghost of a woman. Mary is frightened and flees back to bed. Mary wakes in the morning but does not tell her husband what she saw. The next night, Mary hears creaking again. She again goes onto the walk and encounters the ghost. This time Mary asks who she is but the ghost does not respond. Mary goes back to bed and falls asleep. The next morning Mary decides the ghost is real and sets out to investigate. She drives to the town library and finds out the home they bought belonged to Captain Bellows. The Captain was lost in a storm. Elizabeth Bellows was his widow. Mary goes back home, ready for the night to come. At the same time, she goes out to the walk. This time she asks the ghost if she is Elizabeth Bellows. This time, the ghost responds by telling Mary to leave her alone. Mary goes back to bed. Mary decides she's going to investigate further. Mary goes to the library but while there she is accosted by an old woman who denounces Mary for intruding where she doesn't belong. Mary ignores the old woman and digs deeper. She finds out that Captain Bellows on his last trip was transporting slaves. Mary decides to tell the ghost the truth. That night, Mary goes to the walk. She confronts the ghost and tells her the truth about her husband, thinking if she knew the truth about the evil he did, she would let go. Suddenly, the old woman enters the walk. She screams at Mary for telling the ghost the story of the Captain trading slaves. Elizabeth's ghost was keeping watch on the walk out of fear that the Captain would return, not for love. Just then, the sea begins to bubble and a ghost ship pops out of the water. Mary runs to her room and grabs her husband's gun. She rushes back outside and stares at the ghostly apparition of Captain Bellows. The Captain says he is going to finally end his deceitful wife. The old lady jumps between the two ghosts. The Captain kills Potter with one stroke of his sword. Mary then shoots the Captain four times, with no effect. The Captain turn towards Mary, aiming to kill her. Suddenly, Robert runs out onto the walk and the Captain strikes him unconscious. The Captain turns back towards Mary. Just then, a harpoon slams thought the Captain's chest, the harpoon held by the ghost of Elizabeth. The Captain wails and falls to the deck and disintegrates into thin air. Elizabeth thanks Mary for finally freeing her then she too dissolves into the wind. May runs to Robert. Robert is in a hospital room, recovering from a concussion. Mary, sitting by his side, tells him the whole story and then smiles. Mary tells him she is pregnant.
