Last Christmas
Mary and Joseph are shocked when an armed stranger shows up at
the Bethlehem manger where they have stopped for the night.
Who doesn’t like Christmas stories? The Titular “Greatest Story Ever Told” has been brought to the screen so many times; each with different narrative angles, focuses, nuances - sometimes a fabulous seventies soundtrack, too!
And even for those who aren’t religious, Christmas as a holiday can still be savored as a moment of cheer and family bonding – good stuff, no matter what one’s faith (or lack thereof).
And what if you could view the start of it all first hand? That would be a moment of miracle and wonder… right?
Meet Harrison – a middle-aged stranger approaching a crowded Bethlehem Inn. Based on the language, and the vibe, it’s THAT Inn. And THAT time…
A fact confirmed after Harrison is told by the innkeeper there are “no rooms”. The establishment’s sadly full. To which Harrison proclaims:
HARRISON
Excellent!
The befuddled Innkeeper stammers – what traveler in his right mind would be overjoyed at being turned away? Until Harrison points out he’s looking for a certain someone. TWO someones. Soon to be three, actually…
HARRISON
No, I’m just passing through.
I was hoping you might help me
locate an old friend of mine.
He would have arrived not long ago
with his wife and a donkey.
INNKEEPER
(long beat)
You mean Joseph of Nazareth?
HARRISON
Yes, that’s him!
INNKEEPER
His wife. . . uhm. . .
Mary – and yes, she’s quite pregnant, about to give birth. The innkeeper admits he let the family squat out by the barn, and lets Harrison know where they might be found.
Moments later, Joseph greets the stranger.
Once the id is confirmed, Harrison follows up his introduction by whipping out…
JOSEPH
(beat)
What’s that?
HARRISON
It’s called a gun.
JOSEPH
What does it do?
HARRISON
(chuckles)
You’ll soon see.
But before Harrison can commit the ultimate crime and throw all of world history into chaos… a glow surrounds him. He vaporizes – to reappear in…
Modern day. Surrounded by computers and VERY irate colleague Horowitz.
Yup, that’s right. Harrison’s a time traveler. But shooting Joseph and Mary pre-Jesus?!? What kind of twisted goal could motivate such a crime spree?
Oh, and what damage has Harrison’s little visit wrought upon the timeline? You know that whole Butterfly effect deal? It’s best to keep the mystery in place until you read. But despite the “blasphemous” potential, Last Christmas is a dark, tongue in cheek Science Fiction what-if that’s sure to get both laughs and gasps from audiences. Directors, this is a Christmas present you might want to unwrap way ahead of time!
