Synopsis/Details
"Callahan & Shaw" is a gritty crime drama that delves into the dark underbelly of Las Vegas. Sarah Callahan, a fiercely independent investigative journalist, is driven by her passion for uncovering the next big story. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with Mick Shaw, a hardened ex-undercover cop, and underground opal-miner from the Australian Outback, who now lives as a recluse in the sprawling flood tunnels of Vegas. The series begins with Callahan relentlessly pursuing a cold case involving a string of unsolved murders that span two decades. Her investigation leads her to suspect that the killer, known as the "Tunnel Killer," uses the extensive network of flood tunnels beneath the city as a hideout—an overlooked sanctuary for his grim activities. Determined to reveal the truth, Callahan immerses herself in the subterranean world inhabited by the city’s homeless population, a community living in the shadows and privy to secrets that the surface world remains blind to. Her investigation takes a perilous turn when she is shot and swept away by floodwaters, only to be rescued by a mysterious hermit who stays in the shadows while nursing her back to health. As Callahan recuperates, she learns about the hermit's missing son, last seen at the Bellagio Casino five years ago. However, before she can delve deeper into this lead, the police investigation culminates in the hermit's arrest. At the police station, his true identity is revealed: Michael Shaw, a legendary Australian undercover detective who vanished years ago after a mental breakdown triggered by his son's disappearance. The first season follows Callahan and Shaw as they forge an unconventional partnership. Shaw’s expertise in disguise and infiltration proves invaluable as they pursue the Tunnel Killer while simultaneously investigating his son's disappearance. Each episode intricately weaves together these two central mysteries, hinting at a larger conspiracy involving casino executives, corrupt police officials, and a human trafficking ring. Shaw's fragile mental state and Callahan's struggle to balance journalistic ethics with personal involvement complicate their collaboration. As they work together, Shaw assists Callahan in solving other cold cases, each of which may hold clues to the serial killer and his son's whereabouts. Their investigations lead them from opulent casino penthouses to the darkest corners of the tunnel system, revealing stark social contrasts within Las Vegas.
