There have been dozens of portrayals of desperate, gritty, and resilient Civil War widows and
orphans over the years, most famously Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind. In some respects, the protagonist and her daughter in my folk horror ‘Down in the Horror’ continue in this lineage: they are survivors. They've survived a man's war, lost the man in their life that vowed to protect them, and must continue to survive without the protection of men or the society that they were born into. They've chosen to continue living the life they are accustomed to (whatever the consequence) instead of moving on, evolving with the times and their new circumstances.
This is ‘Down in the Holler.’
