It is August 1990, and Robin, an ordinary, unassuming man, is looking to buy an ordinary, unassuming secondhand car to buy. However, his head is turned when a stranger appears on the scene with a stunning vintage MG roadster for sale at a knockdown price. Following a relentless but enticing sales patter, Robin can’t resist and buys the car.
On his first run out, Robin becomes fed up with all the radio stations reporting on the approaching Gulf War. Robin plays a cassette tape he finds in the glove box. It appears to be blank, but there is a voice recording suddenly. He is spooked to hear a young man describe how he’d like to die – dramatically in a car crash on a dark, rainy night. He dismisses the strange conversation, ejects the tape, and pays no further attention to it.
On his return home, the weather takes a turn for the worse, and the car seems to be making unusual noises, but he assumes it’s due to outside conditions. Eyes on the road, he reaches for a tape and unwittingly finds the tape with the voices again. The male continues his morbid conversation. Then another voice sounds a clearer, menacing voice - a voice familiar to Robin. It is the voice of the man who sold him the car. The voice manifests itself in human form and appears, smiling in the reflection of the rear-view mirror. Robin turns around in disbelief. No one is there, but the moment of lot concentration causes the car to spin and crash violently. In the wreckage, the last thing a dying Robin sees is the figure of the mysterious man walking away from the scene.
