Synopsis/Details
This is the third in chronological sequence of five "Father Brown" spec scripts I have written for the BBC comedy-drama series (I'm working on the fifth one now); Though each have separate stories, certain story elements/character arc developments continue through each one to the next (as well as having callback references to actual produced episodes of the series). Even if you only read one of them, I've included a "Previously On" summary of what's happened so far in my previous specs for the show ("The Dark Lantern" and "The Wrong Scone") right after the character list at the top of the script, which should make the story understandable even for readers/viewers who are not familiar with the show itself. I also use the UK spellings of various words, which differ from the US spellings, since these specs are aimed at selling to the UK market/BBC, with the hope of getting the attention of the producers of the "Father Brown" series itself, since my ultimate goal as a writer is to become a regular contributing writer to this series.
All Accolades & Coverage

Excerpt of the feedback coverage from the 2021 Pipeline Writing Competition:
"The Fool’s Crown is a Father Brown spec episode that highlights complicated characters and a villain that believes he’s the hero of his own story. The writer knows the series well and has crafted an excellent example of what might happen on air. We’re interested in Hawkwood, and we lean in to find out what kind of game he’s playing when Mallory visits. We’re not exactly sure by the end of that first scene, except we know he wants Mallory to attend his execution. We’re pretty sure there’s something more to it, likely something to save his own life. And that hooks us."

The Writer: Karen Simmons

I have worked as both a Production Assistant and Story Assistant on various television show productions, while also working on my own tv spec scripts over the years. I've also been ghost-writing for my husband, Eddie Pepitone, who is a stand-up comedian/actor, having written many jokes, online videos, sketches, co-written on his one-man stage shows, and wrote an award-winning mockumentary short film that he starred in called "Runyon: Just Above Sunset" (which won Best in Show at the L.A. "Mockfest" film festival in 2011, among other awards). I was part of a writer's room for the David Feldman Comedy podcast (a sort of cross between "SCTV" and Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion") for… Go to bio
