Synopsis/Details

A dark comedy set in Fayetteville, N.C., “FreedomLand” combines the acerbic tone of “Burn After Reading” with the unlikely buddies vibe of “Pineapple Express.”

Unemployed Fayetteville chef Gage Randolph agrees to dig up Stonewall Jackson’s left arm at the behest of his best friend, Bud Roy, and a tax-hating, Silicon Valley billionaire with an unhealthy fondness for the Confederacy. A series of unfortunate complications on the way home brings Gage together with Monica, a TV pundit, and Jacob, America’s most incompetent domestic terrorist, who made a pathetic attempt to blow up the IRS with “fertilizer-enhanced” pipe bombs, earning him the sobriquet “Unacrapper.” With Monica as their captive, Gage and the Unacrapper hide out in Bud Roy’s shuttered strip bar, “Knockers”, where Gage tries to set things right with Monica, get rid of the Unacrapper and renegotiate the price for Stonewall’s arm.

Meanwhile, Sam, an upright local deputy who, some time before, accidentally shot Bud Roy during a surprisingly contentious intellectual property dispute, harbors suspicions that Bud Roy and Gage are racking up felonies at an alarming rate. To Bud Roy’s dismay, a recent windfall leads to his fiancée’s acquisition of a large African leopard and the IRS presenting him with an even larger tax bill. With the help of a shady lawyer, Gage and company meet with their would-be savior -- the Silicon Valley billionaire whose real agenda may not be in their best interests.

With Sam hot on their trail and skeleton arm in hand, Gage and company -- including one angry leopard -- converge on FreedomLand, the billionaire’s lavishly appointed exploratory oil rig retrofitted into the epitome of “personal sovereignty solutions for the extremely high net worth individual.” A tropical storm and the leopard’s escape provide the backdrop for an exciting, ironic, and darkly humorous finale where many of the characters discover better versions of themselves and others discover the perils of getting on the wrong side of carnivorous African megafauna.
