Synopsis/Details

Hack Need is a densely plotted dark Comedy that combines the family-in-peril dynamic of “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” with the labyrinthine no-honor-among-thieves vibe of “Baby Driver.”

Candy and Didi are ex-women’s lacrosse champs, now married and raising a four-year old daughter. Candy is the breadwinner, working as the chief security officer at a large bitcoin exchange. Didi has put her career as a doctor on pause to raise their daughter, but she yearns to re-enter the workforce. There’s familiarity, love, and tension in their relationship

When Candy’s shady boss notices a growing organizational rift in his largest client — the Russian mafia — he senses an opportunity to score a cool billion. He enlists a jaded, amoral police detective who has been investigating the mafia. The Detective has a man on the inside - Anton, an undercover officer who just wants to do the right thing. These three pit the mafia factions against each other and set in motion the mafia’s daring theft of a billion-dollar bitcoin account.

To get the bitcoin out of the exchange, cover tracks and set up a fall guy, the mafia force Candy to transfer the bitcoin to an encrypted thumb drive. She has a trick up her sleeve though but still finds herself under arrest minutes after the heist, while Didi and their daughter are trapped at home by menacing mafia henchmen.

A series of double-crosses ensues that grievously wounds Anton and eventually brings the warring mafia factions together at Candy’s house while Didi and the daughter hide in the attic. As the crooked detective and Candy wait a safe distance away, the mafia factions shoot each other. Candy’s boss arrives while the detective presses Candy for the key to the thumb drive. The boss double-crosses the detective and compels Candy to hand over the encryption key. Before he can eliminate Candy and destroy the evidence, Didi descends from the attic, lacrosse stick in hand, and forces a final showdown.

All the bad guys receive cosmic justice. Candy Didi and their daughter start a new life together with Didi the doctor as the breadwinner and Candy the stay at home mom. Anton begins the long road to recovery with Didi’s help. And the billion dollars in bitcoin – donated mysteriously to the medical facility that is helping Anton get back on his feet.
