Synopsis/Details
LAURA WILSON (early-20s) has had recurring nightmares, scattered throughout time, forcing her to wake up night after night. TOMMY SINGLETON (early-20s), Laura's concerned boyfriend, advises her to seek psychological help, but Laura insists she'll be okay. One day, Laura sees a strange crystal cube in her room. She picks up a note that's on top of the cube, a note that's an invitation to visit the Mistresses of Sleep: three mysterious hypnotists specializing in dreams and nightmares. She's reluctant, thinking it's nothing but a prank, but Laura's best friend MICHELLE THOMAS (early-20s) convinces Laura to go see them to discover the reason behind her nightmares. Laura arrives at a gypsy wagon where she meets the first Mistress of Sleep: SUNRISE (early-20s), an Irish gypsy girl whose specialty is past life regression. Using a Celtic Knot medallion, Sunrise hypnotizes Laura and regresses her back to the mid-15th century. Laura is an English princess named MARIE, who is chased in the forest by a fierce, multi-colored fire-breathing dragon. This becomes intense for Laura, as she "feels" the pain of being eaten alive by the dragon; she violently wakes up. She's surprised to see that Sunrise isn't there. Laura gets up from her seat when she sees a dragon's heart. Figuring this to be a clue to solving the mystery of her nightmare, Laura takes the dragon's heart and goes back home. She goes to her room and puts the dragon's heart inside the cube, which lights up. She's puzzled by the glow. Laura tells Tommy about part of her dream representing her doomed previous life, but he thinks reincarnation is a bunch of nonsense. Later that night Laura sees another note on top of the cube, reminding her of the next day's session with the second Mistress of Sleep. She has another nightmare, the parts involving a shadowy demonic figure and a nuclear blast. The next day Tommy treats Laura to brunch at a restaurant to get her mind off the strange dreams. She tells him of her plans to see another hypnotist to explore the second part of her nightmare, but Tommy's not too crazy about the idea. He tries to convince her to stop seeing hypnotists, but the two get into an argument. Tommy abruptly leaves Laura. After gaining her composure, Laura checks her watch and sees that it's time to visit the second Mistress of Sleep. Laura drives to a carnival where she's greeted by HIGH NOON (mid-30s), a Swedish woman who's the resident fortune teller/hypnotist; her specialty is present time progression, a hypnotic technique which enables the subject to "witness" a person's events in real time. Inside the makeup room, High Noon uses her crystal ball to put Laura under and start the session. In a hypnotic state, Laura "sees" a shadowy demonic figure chase down a guy in his early-20s. To Laura's horror, the target is Tommy. The demon takes a sharp knife and instantly kills him. Laura shakes violently as she "feels" Tommy's agonizing pain and abruptly wakes up, desolate and in tears. As before there's no trace of the hypnotist, and Laura finds her second clue, a human heart. She grabs it and quickly leaves the carnival to help Tommy. However, she sees the police covering the area as they carry Tommy out in a body bag. As horrified as she is at the sight of her now-dead boyfriend, Laura's even more horrified by the realization that the "heart" in her car is Tommy's. Back in her room, a brokenhearted Laura puts Tommy's heart inside the crystal cube, which lights up even brighter. When she closes the cube, she sees another note on top of it. In anger, Laura throws the note in the trash. Crying herself to sleep, she has another nightmare of an Asian teenage girl obliterated by the nuclear blast. Laura wakes up screaming and hears the doorbell; it's Michelle, who hugs a teary-eyed Laura. They go to Laura's room and pick up the note from the trash; the note reminds Laura of her session with the third Mistress of Sleep. Although hesitant at first and still thinking about losing Tommy, Laura decides to go solve the final part of her nightmare. Michelle insists on going with her to the session. Laura and Michelle arrive at a strange Goth nightclub where they meet SUNSET (early-30s), an Australian Goth lady with steampunk fashion sense. Her hypnotic specialty: future life progression, the technique that enables a subject to discover what will happen in his or her next life. In Sunset's office, with Michelle watching, Sunset hypnotizes Laura with a steampunk pocket watch. Now under the hypnotic state, Laura "sees" her next life. It is the early 23rd century, and an Asian teenage girl named YOSHI (17) is packing her things. She just watched a report on the news about a possible nuclear blast. YOSHI'S FATHER (late-50s) tries to stop her from going outside, but a demon attacks and kills him. A terrified Yoshi flees from the demon and races out of the house. On the TV there's a photo of dead workers at a nuclear facility that's been taken over by a group of red demons. Meanwhile, Yoshi's driving as fast as she can before the bomb explodes. There's a nuclear blast and the entire town is obliterated, with Yoshi perishing as well. Laura screams in unbelievable pain. Michelle rushes to her friend's side and is relieved when Laura finally wakes up. They find Laura's final clue: Sunset's hypnotic pocket watch. Laura carefully picks up the watch, then she and Michelle head back to Laura's house. While Michelle is downstairs, Laura's in her room where she sees the crystal cube. She opens it and carefully puts the steampunk pocket watch inside the cube. She closes it, then the cube glows brighter than the sun itself. The lights in the room flicker on and off, the room shaking like an earthquake. The noise gets Michelle's attention, and she races upstairs to Laura's room. She's stunned by the intense glow of the crystal cube, which blinds Laura and takes over the entire room. Then suddenly... Laura finds herself on an unknown beach. She sees the Mistresses of Sleep, who open the cube and take out the pocket watch with a dragon that has Tommy's face as its "head". Laura's petrified and tries to run away, but is visited by MIDNIGHT (mid-50s), the Queen of Slumber. Midnight hypnotizes Laura with the pocket watch while the Mistresses gently rub Laura's temples. The four of them put Laura into an eternal sleep.
