Mr Novak. A 10 part 1 hour returning teledrama series. Set around the Welsh town of Wrexham in the 1940's and the present day.
What is it to be a refugee? Exploring themes of loss, isolation, loneliness and belonging.
1944, and Novak, a critically wounded and traumatised Polish soldier is evacuated to a hospital near Wrexham. He lies broken, helpless and longing for home.
Mary, a young nurse and a coal miner's daughter with a fierce loyalty and a fiery Welsh temper tends to his physical wounds and his guilt over his brother's death.
Love blossoms amidst Catholic intolerance and prejudice within her own Puritanical chapel community.
She falls pregnant as the war ends but the local Minister refuses to marry them. Without status and acceptance she becomes a refugee in her own home.
Meanwhile, Novak is drafted into the British army. A global crisis looms as Novak and Mary face waves of desperate Polish refugees descending on Wrexham.
Modern day Wrexham. Teenager Mark, a troubled paperboy from a rough background is attacked by racist hoodies.
His crime? Anna, his fiercely loyal second generation Polish
girlfriend.
He shelters with a Mr and Mrs Novak, a racially harassed elderly couple.
Mutual distrust ebbs away to an unlikely friendship, threatened when Mark's far right EDL father stirs riots against
incoming Syrian refugees.
Their lives intertwine as a new global refugee crisis looms.
