Synopsis/Details
JOSEPH Written Pitch A ragtag battalion of Polish soldiers must dig in around the home of a mysterious old man, as they await the onslaught of the Nazi SS, in the earliest days of World War 2. 'Joseph' is a World War 2/ supernatural fantasy feature screenplay. Influenced by "Raiders of the Lost Ark", Michael Mann's "The Keep" and the 2017 "Wonder Woman". Overall tone is dark. War and fantasy violence is high. Overall rating R. Reduced to PG-13 with lessening of violence and strong language. September 1939. The German battleship Schleswig Holstein fires on the Polish Westerplatte seaport. World War 2 begins. Poland reels before the Nazi invasion. Ten days later. Rural central Poland. A battalion of weary Polish soldiers dig in around the home of Joseph. The final Nazi onslaught on Warsaw will soon begin. An ensemble cast with Joseph as the linchpin: Joseph: Two hundred and sixty four years old. A descendant of the Nephilim. A retired cavalry colonel. A once proud leader of the Polish Husaria. Now secretive and peaceful. His Biblical powers now used for healing the sick. His brutal warrior past willingly behind him. A desire to die peacefully at home. Eleonora: Joseph's beautiful granddaughter. A seemingly young woman. Secretive. Devoted to Joseph. She refuses to leave him. Her own powers used for healing but a spiteful side lurks. James (Tea Time): A shy young Polish-English journalist from a long military family. Rejected by the British army for bad eyesight. Journalism is a poor second choice. Joseph takes him under his wing. A surrogate for his own long dead son Aleksy. James' journey transforms him from civilian to brave soldier. Major Hetmanczyk: Officer commanding. A young cavalryman. Brave and determined. Saddled with command against impossible odds. Troubled by fears for his half Jewish family and ghostly hallucinations. His Catholic faith is lost. Joseph's Biblical origins challenge him. Captain Bauman: A young Polish-American Orthodox Jew. A second generation Chicagoan returned to fight Nazism. An outsider. A foreigner yet to prove his worth. Lieutenant Abdulewicz: A courageous young native Muslim Tatar. Headstrong. Two soldiers deeply divided by their faith. They violently clash. Battle against a common evil ultimately unites them. The dreaded SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler division launch their final assault. Massed Panzers and SS Stormtroopers advance. The brave Polish stand crumbles. Casualties rapidly mount. Healing the wounded, Joseph's health dwindles. His long dead son Aleksy appears to him in a vision. His time has come. Joseph and Aleksy will ride into battle one last time to allow James and Eleonora to escape. The Poles chaotically retreat. Joseph rides out and rallies them. The Polish cavalry launch their last defiant charge. A vast army of ghostly Husaria appear and charge with them. Panzers swept away, fleeing Stormtroopers slaughtered in an epic last charge. James and Eleonora escape but Stormtroopers catch them. Eleonora savagely attacks before being shot. Aleksy and Husaria charge in and kill the Stormtroopers. Victory seems near as screaming Stukas bomb Joseph and the cavalry into oblivion. Aleksy disappears. Eleonora heals herself. She and James make their escape. London, one year later. Now a confident British Lieutenant, James arrives at the Polish embassy in exile. He walks into a large board room. Polish senior officers walk in followed by Eleonora in Polish army uniform. 'Joseph' will lead you on an exciting and emotional journey with the 'First to Fight'. A blending of period adventure, World War 2 and Magical Realism genres will appeal to a very wide audience around the world. My name is Ian Davies. I'm a screenwriter based in the UK. Being married to a Polish girl, I have spent extensive periods of time in Poland over the years. As an archaeologist, I've brought extensive research and period knowledge into the story of 'Joseph' .

The Writer: Ian Davies

My writing journey began in primary school. Every week our teacher would challenge us to write an original story. I usually won and had my work read out....so the bug was caught! By profession I am an archaeologist of 20 years. Part of the job requires historical research so I apply this also to my writing, hence why I lean more towards historically based stories and those that contain magical realism. I currently have over 20 scripts, including a completed tv series. Screenplays 'Joseph', 'Mathias' 'Padre' and 'Mr Novak'; Part 1 are all multi-award winning globally. As with any writer, I aim one day to see my work reach the screen (big or small), but the important thing is to keep writing… Go to bio
