Synopsis/Details
It all starts with a phone call between Jackie Dunn and her father, Jack, discussing his business. He surprises her by telling her he is giving all to her and that he is no longer going to be a part of it. After he hangs up, he walks throughout the house putting sticky notes on items, with the names of his kids, before finishing in the tub where he takes his life.
Jackie meets a friend of the family named Max, who outlines the terms of her father’s will where his hopes to have the family together for a week at his vacation home before he grants them their inheritance. Max offers to come along for support.
Jackie calls the other kids (Jack Jr., Robert, and Sarah) and tells them of their father’s wishes, and they agree to come.
Jackie is already at their father’s vacation villa when the others arrive from the airport. After a pep talk from Max, she encounters them, one by one, starting with Richard. None of the conversations go well, with the exception of Jack Jr who appears to be “the kind one.”
They meet for dinner which is filled with tension, truth, and humor before Richard arrives already drunk. They all agree that they don’t want Max there and he decides to leave the villa and go stay in town for the rest of the week. He gives Jackie all his support and tells her he will be there for her if she needs him.
Sarah returns to the others to hand out letters that their father left for them. They are all well received, except for Richard. The will is read, and it angers the rest of the family. Richard, who is now extremely drunk, tells off everyone in the room before storming outside. He is so inebriated that he falls into the pool and cracks his head against the bottom. Jackie saves him.
When Richard awakens, he finds that everyone is in the room except for Jackie who has gone to town and left him with one last letter from their Dad. It is his hospitalization records from seven years ago.
Richard confesses to his brothers and sisters that they are all… Richard, Jack Jr., Robert, and Sarah… the same person – Richard.
Jackie meets Max at a restaurant in town and he convinces her that she shouldn’t have panicked about Richard’s accident, and she has to go back.
Richard argues with Robert, Sarah, and Jack Jr about the fact that they are all a part of him. The other aspects of himself don’t believe it and he proves it to them by revealing how they came to be and how they interact with each other now.
Jackie returns and she and Richard have a heart to heart about his disorder. She had known all along and wanted to support him. It goes moderately well but will obviously be continued in the morning.
Robert meets Jackie that morning for breakfast. Their conversation reveals that both have contemplated suicide at different points in their lives. Richard even tells Jackie how their mother took her life in what was believed to be a car accident involving another driver. Their healing, and reconciliation, have begun.
The final scene is at their father’s house and Jackie shows Richard all the post notes which have been left on all the things in the house. The “pieces” of him that he left for them.
