Synopsis/Details
A covert military experiment goes wrong and a spate of violence and madness sweeps Los Angeles. The project is moved to a remote polar station and one year later a stranger turns up, searching for an answer to why his wife died a year before. But all he finds is destruction and deserted passageways haunted by living nightmares. Unable to locate the crew he scours the base for journals and diaries and begins to piece together events.
From the beginning there had been problems among the staff – sleep disturbances progressed into waking hallucinations and paranoid fears. An accidentally discovered ice cavern reveals a frozen descendant of late dinosaur period, resembling early Man’s imagery of the Horned God. Soon violence erupts and the physical manifestation of the beast stalks the corridors of the base.
The stranger learns that the research involved a new form of energy which could be stored, like a digital recording, and it was this energy which was driving everyone mad. He also learns that the desperate personnel had mined the base with explosives. The stranger is now suffering hallucinations himself and is being stalked by something large and dangerous, but unseen. Before he succumbs completely to the madness which killed everyone else he prepares to leave, but runs into a recovery team of marines, under orders to retrieve all evidence of the experiment, and to ensure there are no survivors. He escapes and makes it across the ice plain as the explosives detonate. The plain, the marines and the base disappear, leaving the stranger alone on the ice.
In the penultimate scene the President and the Vice President are considering a link they have just received over the internet, ostensibly from the facility at the pole. They open the link. From outside the office are the sounds of some huge beast tearing someone apart.
The final scene has the stranger standing in the snow outside the White House fence. There is shooting all around him and screams. He turns and walks into the mist. Moments later the dim figure of the Horned God appears, and laughs.
