Synopsis/Details
RENDEZVOUS is a action/drama which begins at the Normandy landings and spends the majority of time in the French countryside behind German lines. It has a limited amount of characters and is light on battle scenes.
RENDEZVOUS is the story of a special squad of 7 US soldiers led by Sergeant Scott Flanagan. Rooked into a suicide mission because they stole from their corrupt commanding officer, they must sneak behind German lines and get to a mountain where they can provide valuable reconnaissance and prevent the invasion from being thrown back into the sea. If the squad gets separated at the landing, which they do, they must meet at a rendezvous point and run a gauntlet to get to the mountain. When they get close to their goal, they realize there is a bigger purpose to their mission.
The action starts on the transport on the way to the beach. After they scramble off the transport, we flash forward to the rendezvous point, a lonely tree in the middle of a summer field. The men trickle in, giving them too much time to consider their circumstances, jump at every sound, get buzzed by a German fighter, have a column run through their encampment and generally overthink their ultimate goal which the Germans will go to all lengths to prevent.
To get to the mountain, this small squad must take a bridge two days away. On the way, they make an unmilitary choice to rescue a little girl, ambush a German patrol, and accidentally kill one of their own.
With less bravado then they had before the death of their own soldier, they get to the bridge and discover the 12 Germans they were expecting are now 50 and possess a Tiger tank. Hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned, they need a miracle to take the bridge and get one. Surprise, determination and a little luck allows them to take the bridge in a pitched battle.
Now that the bridge is taken and knowing the Germans will be coming after them, they double time it towards the mountain. However, the men want Sarge to fess up about his time in Paris first. He decides to tell them on the way only to be interrupted by strafing from an A-10 Warthog. They run and duck like they've never have before. After losing the jet, Sarge confesses. They keep up the pace because they are being chased. During short breaks to catch their breaths and reload, they delve into other soldier's lives.
As they pass through a valley, suddenly 10 modern commandos charge down from the rim. The squad dives for cover and fights off the attackers, not before sustaining casualties. They regroup and start to hobble towards the mountain when Sarge and one soldier, who have not gotten along since day one (the soldier feels Sarge does not give him his due respect), get into a fist fight. The others pull them apart and after a heated exchange, Sarge ends up admitting he was wrong based on the soldier's service as a general in Viet Nam.
With inter-squad order restored and new understandings, the last and oldest soldier to rendezvous says he needs to get home to help his wife. The squad is instantly transported back to the tree. The others inform the old soldier that it won’t be possible. Each soldier confirms to the oldest soldier that they have all passed on. Some have passed on at the D-Day beach and others farther along in life. They are at the rendezvous point; the rendezvous point they agreed to before the invasion; the rendezvous point in the afterlife. With everything settled and Sarge saluting the private turned general he despised earlier, they finish the march to the Pearly Gates.
