Synopsis/Details
Jake steals a bag from the back of a forensic van after a neighbour, whom the locals called Winnie the witch, died in a house fire. He takes the bag to his friends, vain girlfriend Clare, Danny and his emo sister Alex, handsome Brad, and Dale the joker. Everyone tries to open a box within the bag, but it has no visible lid or lock, until Clare opens it with ease. As she does when alone with Jake, a foul dust escapes. They check out the demon picture cards and let Alex know, as she is studying occult. One night, the 6 have a fun night in and Alex starts the first reading for Brad. She is amazed to see a demon move and morph into scenes of her friends, but it is of concern as she sees a hooded man approach Brad. She feels his pain and is thrown back, clutching her stomach. Suddenly the lights are blown. Dale finds it all amusing. Brad is worried he will die when she finishes the reading with the scene of a funeral.
The lights are blown again, and Dale is blamed, but the cards have rearranged into a fan, ready for their next player, Jake. Brad is sitting opposite so he does the reading. Sure enough, he sees them come to life, seeing Jake in a strange house arguing with Clare.(Later te house will be sen as the witch's burnt house). Brad too, sees a sharp object in the hands of a demon attacking Jake. Jake is not impressed wit their nonsense and walks out.
Clare is now free to sit next to her secret lover, Brad, whom only Alex knows about. Dale reads for Danny, now they are all drunk. He sees the demons move around and is convinced he is too drunk, but sees Danny outside 7/11, where they buy beer. He then sees a red jeep hurtling towards Danny and through the shop window. They take a break and actually go to 7/1, where his prediction happens and he is killed by a runaway jeep. Back at the house, the cards have rearranged again for the next player.
Jake throws the deck back over the witch's fence to get rid of them, but when he is home, they are waiting for him. At Danny's funeral, Brad and Clare get close. Meanwhile, Alex takes the box, along with the cards and parchment of instructions to her spiritual teacher. She researches to find the cards are controlled by Hsanatasi, the karma demon and a mirror spell. Whoever uses the cards, the demon will chose an alternative future, depending on their future intentions. She explains that someone imprisoned Hsanatasi to the box, like a genie, but they must finish what they started and complete all 6 readings so the box may lock shut. Clare was able to open the box as she was a purer soul. (2 timing your boyfriend with his best friend a crime).
Jake tries to burn them, then they try to take them to a church priest, who after strict instruction NOT to open the box, is compelled to do just that. He is forced to use them on himself, and by morning, he is seen on the news being arrested for child abuse, ranting about a demon. The deck is then in the hands of the police lab, where the elderly technician uses them, and goes home to win the lottery. i.e he was a righteous man. The cards are returned to church and the priest, who is in psychiatric care. More staff are killed, until his secretary returns them to Jake. Now the teens have to face the fact that they have to finish it, so they meet at the witch's burnt house. The demon shows himself above them, waiting for the first reading, which is Alex, read by Dale once again. He sees the same scene at 7/11 then Alex with the jeep driver. She had arranged her brother's murder, as he was abusing her. So the sick truths come to light, and she loses her sanity somewhat. Alex knows she took a life, so her karma must be balanced by Hsanatasi. The demon has a frenzy as the next reading is done. Jake insists he do Clare, as he is suspicious of her, and rightly so. Her truths come out as her affair is seen, and she tries to justify it, but all goes wrong when angry Jake attacks Brad. In a scuffle, Jake is stabbed by Clare by accident, and dies. Hsanatasi hovers over his body and takes his soul, screaming and smelling his foul self.
Still, they must soldier on, as Clare reads for Dale, who has nothing bad at all, and revitalises his relationship with his widowed father. Hsanatsi in a whirlwind, is forced back into the box, and it locks with no seams. The suvivors re burn the house, as Alex refuses to leave. The gas blows the house, killing Alex and maiming Clare with facial/hand burns. The deaths were blamed on Alex and Jake committing suicide when her diary is found of their actions. Dale keeps the box safe.
After the funerals, Brad parts company, but is approached by a hooded man, who stabs him, stating that Jake had sent him, and better late than never. He dies leaving Clare to deal with her karmic scars, and Dale to bond with her, and his father. As he moves into his father's new shop, which had been his mother's dream before dying of cancer, the box disappears, and finds itself at a car boot sale. A gypsy boy ad his girlfriend steal it, and start the course again with his friends. This time though, we find he is the killer of Brad, and also his grandmother, Winnifred the witch! Hsanatsi had been looking for him all along and finally found his captor who had been Winnies daughter. Winnie had been trying to free the demon back to his own realm and was killed fr meddling. He vowed to find justice/karma for Winnie and he did. The vortex opens and all but the gpsy boy's girlfriend disappears into the demon realm with him. She loses all memory after the vortex closes, leaves the house, even bumping into the boy's mpther, with no recognition either way. She places her headphones on her head and happily strolls home, a bit confused how she got there.
