Synopsis/Details
JEN is murdered by an unseen force in upstate NY. Her brother SAM arrives at her remote country home to wind up her affairs. Sam begins to suspect someone is watching the house from the nearby woods. When he investigates a black van speeds away. KAREN moves to a summer rental a few miles away to get over her husband’s death. She starts hearing strange sounds in the night. Thinking it’s grief, her doctor increases her meds. Sam spots AXEL in the black van in town and tails him, but loses him near Karen’s isolated house. Sam spies on Karen, believing she may know something, whilst in turn being watched by Axel from the nearby woods. Sam engineers an accidental meeting with Karen and they bond over grief. This develops into attraction. Sam asks Karen out. She initially refuses, but later calls him back and agrees. Karen takes a walk in the woods, but is chased by an unseen force crashing through the undergrowth. She escapes unharmed, but becomes convinced she’s losing her mind. Sam arrives for their date and sees Karen’s fragile state. He comforts her and they end up in bed, spied on by Axel. Karen hears another bump that night. Sam investigates, but finds nothing. She tells him she’s losing her mind, but Sam says he suspects someone is stalking her, the same man who killed his sister. When Sam admits to spying on her and faking their accidental meeting, Karen explodes and makes him leave. Karen resolves to leave the area, believing Sam to be a stalker and the cause of her hallucinations. Sam drinks heavily and calls Karen relentlessly, but she won’t answer. After an accident, Sam finds a pentagram chalked underneath his sister’s kitchen table. He drives to Karen’s and breaks in, where he finds another pentagram hidden under a mat. Sam searches the house and finds tiny cameras hidden in the ceilings. Sam searches the nearby woods and finds Axel’s black van. It’s full of surveillance and audio equipment. Axel surprises Sam and holds him at gunpoint. Axel admits killing Sam’s sister. He tells him he’s a paranormal investigator that discovered a supernatural entity and learned to target it through a combination of code and audio signals. Sam attacks him and is shot, but escapes to try and warn Karen. Axel summons the entity and uses his laptop to direct it towards Karen, who’s now returned home. Karen hears strange sounds and is attacked by the unseen entity. Sam doubles back to the van and ambushes Axel. He redirects the entity to their position and leaves with the laptop. Axel tells him to stop, as the wind rises and the entity comes for them. Sam keeps walking until Axel shoots him. Sam watches Axel desperately try to stop the entity as it approaches, knowing they will both die. Karen emerges from her home, battered and bleeding, but alive. She drives away without looking back.
