Synopsis/Details
While the disappearance of the CEO of WINSLOW, a tech company, fills the news, MARION comes home for Alan’s, her father's, funeral. Her younger sister XIMENA found him eviscerated in the woods during a camping trip. Now their ABUELO is looking after both of them. Tension permeates between the remaining family as Marion is trying to atone for ending up in juvie as a teenager. The whole family had moved to the States from Mexico after the death of their mother. Ximena hears strange sounds from the woods behind their house, where she had gone camping with her father. She attempts to record them but doesn’t get anything usable. One night, she witnesses a silhouette of a dinosaur-like creature, but once she tells Marion, it has gone. Marion has a hard time believing her but decides to support her, thinking she could use a distraction following their father’s death. She goads her into stealing a drone from THEO, a right-wing neighbor. The robbery almost goes awry, with Theo recognizing the rental car that Marion drives. They take his drone into the woods, but it gets inexplicably destroyed. Theo reports them to their Abuelo, begging them to recover the drone or at least pay it back. Marion promises she will do it, while Abuelo scolds her into promising they will drop their search for the creature. However, both girls won’t relent and decide to venture into the woods. Marion goes and captures video of the beast, a Utahraptor. They step out and find a dead body in the woods: Winslow’s, who has left a video testimony where she states she was the one who brought the dinosaur. They bring forward the evidence to DETECTIVE SAWYER, but she thinks it all could have been doctored, especially since Winslow was said to be mentally unstable. The recent incident with Theo has also rendered the sisters untrustworthy. Both girls try to get the dinosaur out of the woods using red meat. They succeed, but the Utahraptor rushes into town, causing havoc along the way. While Ximena and Abuelo decide to stop it, Marion thinks they should let it destroy the town after how they’ve been treated. She leaves, while Ximena and Abuelo track the dinosaur to Theo’s house where they almost stop it, but it runs off again. Marion has a change of heart and rushes back into town to help them. She finds the dinosaur but right after she confirms its location, it badly wounds her. Ximena and Abuelo try to rescue Marion to take her to the hospital, but the Utahraptor is in the way. Ximena offers herself as a distraction to save her sister, and succeeds, with Abuelo, Marion, Sawyer, and the police making the dinosaur run off to an unknown destination. Months pass, and a fully recovered and happier Abuelo, Marion, and Ximena make their camping trip to the woods where they encounter a pterodactyl. Somewhere in Ruidoso, New Mexico, the Utahraptor reemerges.
