Synopsis/Details

WENDY FLETCHER, a lonely, gifted young witch trained in secret by her late grandmother, arrives at Johns and Wakes University starving for the one thing she has never been handed: to be chosen. She finds a true friend in cautious, kind-hearted CRYSTAL ANAND — and an obsession in LANCE BOWMAN, the football star who literally collides into her on the quad. Lance is taken, careless, and oblivious; he sees Wendy only as the smart girl who can tutor him out of failing calculus. Wanting him with a hunger that has no bottom, Wendy ignores the one rule her grandmother ever gave her: never use the craft to take a heart that isn't freely given.
Guided by HAZEL GROTT, the ancient crone who keeps the occult shop Ye Olde Mysticism Shoppe, Wendy casts a binding love spell and swallows a living talisman to seal it. The spell works — Lance turns to her like a compass to north — but it also tears open a door that won't close. Small, grinning IMPS slip into the world, unseen, feeding on bravado and dread. As Lance drifts to Wendy, his jilted girlfriend ALISON senses something deeply wrong, and Crystal — with the help of sweet, anxious astrophysics student MANFRED SLOANE — begins to suspect her best friend has let something monstrous loose.

At a nighttime dare beneath a great oak, the imps goad the bewitched Lance higher and higher until he leaps — and dies on the ground below, with Wendy watching in horror. Shattered, she tries and fails to raise him from the dead. Hazel, who engineered the grief all along, offers Wendy the impossible: Lance, returned, in exchange for her soul. Blind with loss, Wendy signs. But Hazel cannot raise the dead — instead she seals a chaos demon, BELLUS, "Devourer of Souls," into Lance's corpse using a carved wooden vessel. The thing that comes home wearing Lance's face is a lie meant to keep Wendy compliant until her soul can be collected — and slowly, lying in the dark beside it, Wendy realizes the full horror of what she has done.

As the dead boy walks the campus in daylight and Alison vanishes, the mysterious PROFESSOR MATHER reveals himself to Crystal and Manfred as far more than a teacher — a celestial guardian who has been watching all along. He gives Manfred the Sanctum Artifact: a gleaming armband that hides beneath the skin until needed, shields its bearer from all harm, and answers true conviction with bolts of holy light. Together the three descend into the shop's cellar, where Hazel's rite to harvest Wendy's soul is already underway.
In the burning ritual chamber, Crystal screams the truth and Bellus sheds Lance's skin, rising into its towering true form. Mather unleashes the full, terrible brilliance he has held back the entire film — and it costs him everything. The Artifact makes Manfred untouchable; he fires on the demon but cannot free Crystal from its fist without killing her, because the Artifact guards only its bearer. The one person who can break the moment is Wendy. Choosing love-as-sacrifice over love-as-possession at last, she pours every scrap of her stolen power into Bellus, forcing it to drop Crystal and clearing Manfred's shot. His conviction absolute, Manfred unleashes a column of light; Mather tears open a portal; together they cast the demon screaming back into the dark. Hazel burns by her own rule, and the shop goes up in flame.

Spent, Mather fades from the world, leaving the Artifact permanently bonded to Manfred — a guardian now against the doors still waiting to open — and a warning that Bellus was only one of many. Crystal and Manfred escape the fire believing Wendy lost. But from the smoke behind the burning shop, Wendy walks out alive — soulless, hollow, changed beyond returning. A crow settles on her shoulder. She turns her back on the fire, on the friend she saved, and on the girl she used to be, and walks alone into the dark, as something newly returned begins, far below the world, to laugh.
