Synopsis/Details
Dating in college can be confusing and brutal, especially if you’re one of the many young people suffering from depression and self-esteem issues. Sophomores Alexander and Alexandra don’t know each other yet, but are kindred spirits facing down their mental health demons as they grow into adulthood and try to find a quality romantic partner. Alexandra is supported by her best friends and roommates, twins Alicia and Alyssa, whose differing views on dating provide her with a unique dual perspective. Alexander is supported by his man-slut best friend Will who tries to build up his confidence through tough love while his mother supports him with good old-fashioned mommying.
Alex and Alex simultaneously hit rock bottom of their depression and dating self-esteem, Alexander facing embarrassment after getting denied by a longtime romantic interest and Alexandra after being dumped by her abusive boyfriend. To forget about their troubles they both seek out an underage, drunken night of fun where they meet and are forced to hide in a closet together after it’s broken up by police.
Realizing they need professional help the two seek out a campus therapist who gets them to take a study on a new depression medication. As the two meet again in the study they bond over their sensitivity, quickly developing a friendship that can’t help but blossom into romance. It’s as if fate is putting them together. As the depression medication starts to take affect and smooths the edges of their anxiety, the two have a first date that starts off unlucky when Alexander is hit in the face by a rogue frisbee, but turns into a marvelous night when the frisbee thrower invites the two to a cross-dressing party where the duo dance and have a sexy moment exchanging outfits to fit the theme. Their second date is an even bigger hit and they have their first kiss.
The two start to develop a close bond over the next month, biking around campus and having romantic sex in each other’s arms. (including a time when Alexandra accidentally walks in on Alexander masturbating and gives him his real fantasy) It appears like the depression medication is helping them past their internal struggles to be able to love clearly and motivate them towards positive self-esteem. But when the study ends and the drug becomes unavailable, cracks start to form in the relationship. Alexander doesn’t believe he can be happy again without the drug. And to top it off Alexandra’s self-esteem falls off a cliff so fast that she attempts to get back with her ex when he apologizes for dumping her. Alexander knows he has to fight to get her back and tries to build up his courage with the help of Alicia and Alyssa and his friend Will’s advice. Finding a balance of healthy habits and a new lower dose depression medication, Alexander confronts Alexandra and the ex boyfriend at a party where he makes a scene to try to win her back; with self-esteem and clarity that he’s earned naturally, telling her that although “the drug made us better at dating, we were right for each other all along.”
Alexandra breaks down and rushes away from both Alexander and her ex. Alexander looks for her all over campus and eventually finds her bicycling to blow off steam. A police officer tries to arrest the duo for drunk-driving on bicycles, but Alexander saves them both. Alexandra starts to realize how true Alexander’s words are about loving her and that her ex could never compare. She whisks him back to the roof of the building where they had their first kiss to rekindle their romance. As Winter turns to Spring the couple’s love blooms again. They have figured out a way to balance each other out.
