Life's been pretty shitty for Steve - and tonight is the final straw. After a hit-and-run, he's reached the end of the road.
But as he sits in his blood-stained car, engine running and exhaust fumes being pumped into the cockpit, a miracle happens. Steve is visited by versions of himself - as a child, as present day and as an old man.
Together, they talk him out of his suicidal dilemma and offer him a second chance. A chance to go back to the hit-and-run site to find the body and call the police with a warning ringing in his ears: "Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes".
After their sales pitch, Steve takes up their offer and heads back out to the deserted country road where earlier he left someone dying in a ditch.
But as he approaches the corpse, he loses his bottle and flees - straight into the path of an oncoming car which slams into him and ends his life in the blink of an eye.
The car brakes hard after impact and stops. The panicked, shocked driver is Steve. History's mistake repeats itself.
