A poignant comedic drama featuring the most genuine portrayal of a monarch of her era.
Leroy (25, African-English, London) is struggling to care for his mother, Amara (65, Nigerian), who suffers from early-onset Alzheimer's. He gets incredibly defensive and combative when the doctor suggests moving Amara into a care home. Leroy's colleague and love interest, Ihuoma (25, African-English, London), tempts him to one of her spirit nights at Westminster Abbey. On the tour, Leroy follows a woman's cry, which only he can hear. He comes face-to-face with the restless spirit of Queen Mary Tudor (Queen of England 1553-58, daughter of Henry VIII). In his escape, Leroy bumps his head, knocking himself unconscious. Leroy wakes in the hospital to find Mary stalking him. He assumes Mary is a hallucination, but soon realises she is something much, much worse.
Mary appears at the most inconvenient of times for Leroy. When he's out in public... on the toilet... during an intimate moment with Ihuoma. He can't catch a break. They're at each other's throats. A Tudor Queen... a roadman. He cannot for the life of him get rid of her. Sage. Potions. Crystals. Blessings. Nothing works. Whilst Leroy is at work, Amara is plagued by old memories and gets lost alone in the cold night. Leroy finds Amara with Mary's help. The two begin to sympathise with each other's situation. Leroy tries additional methods suggested by Ihuoma to help Mary pass over, but without success. Amara's condition further deteriorates. Whilst Leroy is at work, Amara inadvertently causes a severe kitchen fire, but she cannot escape the house as Leroy has locked all the doors and hidden her key to prevent her from getting lost again. Mary utilises the knowledge she has acquired to call emergency services and save Amara's life. The asphyxiation from the smoke has further eroded Amara's memory and cognitive function. She cannot even recognise Leroy anymore. Leroy is forced to put Amara into a care home. Something he promised not to. It breaks his heart... Mary, too.
Leroy and Ihuoma spend day and night trying to figure out how to help Mary. Ihuoma has an idea... Leroy takes Mary to Peterborough Cathedral. To her mother's grave. Here, Mary can finally rest as the ghost of Catherine of Aragon guides her to the light. Amara's health worsens. Her nurse alerts Leroy of the situation. When Leroy arrives at the care home, Amara has already passed away. He has a heartfelt goodbye with Amara's spirit. She echoes the sentiments Mary gave him in their final goodbye. Leroy returns to Westminster Abbey one last time to pay respect to Mary. Here he encounters the ghost of Queen Elizabeth Tudor... Mary's half-sister.
