In a medieval English town Mildred Hawkins, 30, who has a mannish face and a boyish figure, stands accused of witchcraft. She still has attitude despite her predicament. The town crier behaves like a master-of-ceremonies who wants to put on a good show.

In a medieval English town a troubadour sings about an imminent beheading. When he ends his song the executioner beheads him. Next up is MILDRED HAWKINS, an unattractive spinster. She stands accused of witchcraft. The issue is to be settled in trial by combat. Representing the state is a fierce knight. This convinces any would be champions for Mildred to choose discretion. The town crier feels sad for Mildred but the burning must go on. He talks her into making a good show on it by casting some curses and going out with a cackle.
