Dublin, 1862. Sean Finerty is only trying to make it as a writer, while his friend Mack McBride dreams of making his bones with local Irish rebels - by torching the house of an informer. But he’s got the wrong address. With Sean as an unwitting lookout, he burns down the house of Thomas and Nell Farley. The pregnant Nell is lost in the fire, with Thomas seriously injured. The local Fenian Brotherhood rebels decide that, instead of executing the pair, they will condemn them to the same fate anyway - by shipping them to America to enlist in the New York Irish Brigade.

Sean is now doubly conflicted because his fiancé Kate Lenehan has recently immigrated with her family to live on her uncle’s farm in Georgia – far behind enemy lines. He decides – against all odds and reason- that his mission in life is to fight his way South to be with her. It is a dream that will sustain him through many difficult days.

The brigade lists many Irish immigrants – with a high rate of turnover and a few older veteran survivors of hard combat, lately at Antietam where they took horrific losses. Sean also befriends Pap, an old-timer of about thirty, who advises him on life in the army and promises, if alive, to get him to Georgia one way or another, even if it’s in a box. He stays close to his old friend Mack and keeps his sanity by composing a long continuous letter to Kate which serves as narration throughout the story.

The storm cloud of war grows over Fredericksburg as the Union army lingers while Confederates build defenses on the almost impregnable Maryes Heights across the Rappahannock River. Healed from his injuries, Thomas Farley arrives from Ireland as a fresh recruit in the brigade, and begins his search for Sean and Mack with deadly intent.

The Confederates also maintain a sizable Irish Brigade of their own – and a friendly secret meeting is arranged between enemies at a remote outpost in no mans land. The boys have a fine celebration – and Sean searches in vain for someone from the Rebel side to deliver his letter to Kate in Georgia. At the same time, Thomas discovers the identity of Mack, and plots his murder.

Days later the attack on Fredericksburg is launched as Union troops cross the river under heavy fire. Thomas, pretending to befriend Mack, accompanies him to a boat, then stays back and shoots him dead when he reaches the other side. Sean survives the initial attack, and is heartbroken to discover his friend gone – but Thomas now has Sean unaware and in his sites. His revenge still burns, even after Sean unwittingly saves his life from a collapsing wall of a building in the destroyed town.

The Confederate Irish, many of whom we have already met, are deployed behind a stone wall at the base of the heights – the first line of defense facing the Union Army which hurls several fruitless attacks at the wall, leaving a blood soaked field littered with bodies. It’s basically mass murder and now it’s the turn of the Irish Brigade to come face to face with their own kinsmen who nonetheless do their murderous work as ordered. For Sean Finerty it is his baptism of fire and he’s not even aware of the enemy at his back - as Thomas Farley determines to complete his mission of revenge at the very foot of the infamous stonewall of Fredericksburg.
