Synopsis/Details
Thirty year man PVT. ROBERT E. LEE PREWITT, 24 just transferred over from Fort Shafter and looks to better days at Schofield Barracks, yet after refusing to join the E company boxing team he is requisitioned to the "Treatment" by the E Company Captain, while the commander's diminishing marriage troubles worsen when the company 1st SGT. MILT WARDEN has an affair with his wife, who finds kind to the Bugler, but cannot prevent Prew from being tossed to the rigors of hard detail labor where he befriends a PVT. ANGLELO MAGGIO, a wiseguy with a membership to the local men's club where Prew reconciles with old flame Lorene. It is a weekend to remember, yet by Sunday Angelo's misfortune finds him in the Stockade. Prew would later join him in the stockade after an altercation with a Noncom. There witnesses the wrath of FATSO JUDSON, who kills a fellow company member and turns his rage on Maggio. Holmes discovers that Warden and his wife KAREN are having an affair, so he decides to hold it over his 1st SGT for a rainy day. After being released, Prew knows time is running out, decides to take matters into his own hands by killing Judson, then goes AWOL and hides out with Lorene where they would make plans for Oregon, yet the next day the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor. Holmes orders Warden to find Prew and persuade him to return. Prew would be set up and executed by Holmes trying to return, yet Warden would discover that his commander punished a man unfairly, ISAAC BLOOM, after he refused to fix a fight, which would lead to his suicide, the deaths of several E company men. Captain Holmes is relieved and Maggio is released where he finds Prew's coffin in the yard and pays farewell to a true Hoa, as he exits Schofield Barracks gates forever. On the SS Monterey Karen would serenade beside Lorene who knows nothing of Prew’s fate, yet when she mentions his name, Karen forces herself to silence knowing the true events leading to this tragic end, Aloha oE” “Farewell to Thee”.
