Synopsis/Details
Jonathan Winters, a gifted but struggling composer, inherits St. Mary’s Chapel, a decaying and ominous church in a small town. Seeking inspiration, he hopes the church's haunting ambiance will ignite his creative spark. But as he settles in, strange occurrences plague him—ghostly whispers, flickering shadows, and the oppressive sensation of being watched. His curiosity soon turns to dread when he stumbles upon a hidden graveyard beneath the church, filled with the remains of a choir that vanished decades ago. Guided by Lydia, the spirit of a choir member, Jonathan uncovers the church's horrific past. The choir was led by the Choirmaster, a twisted figure who sacrificed his choir in a dark ritual to bind their souls to the church forever, making them sing for him eternally. As Jonathan digs deeper, he finds the Choirmaster’s diary, revealing dark secrets, his lust for eternal power, and an unfinished hymn that could finally free the choir’s souls. However, completing the hymn also risks summoning the Choirmaster’s spirit, setting the stage for a deadly confrontation. As the supernatural forces intensify, Jonathan reaches out to Detective Cardoza, who has been suspicious of the church’s haunted history. Together, they explore the church’s cursed foundation, uncovering traces of a sinister presence that refuses to let go. Driven by compassion for the trapped spirits, Jonathan commits to finishing the hymn, risking his own life to break the curse. The final confrontation with the Choirmaster is a battle of wills and music. Jonathan plays the hymn, summoning the trapped spirits of the choir, who sing in defiance of their captor. The Choirmaster’s spirit, weakened by the music, is forced into a final showdown with Jonathan and Detective Cardoza. In a climactic moment, the hymn’s completion dissolves the Choirmaster’s power, freeing the choir members’ spirits and ending the church’s curse. As dawn breaks, Jonathan plants a "For Sale" sign outside the church, finally at peace. Though he is free from the church’s dark influence, the experience leaves him changed. In a haunting final moment, an eerie note plays on the organ inside the empty church, hinting that some dark presence may still linger.

The Writer: Gary Rose

I’m an optioned screenwriter who, in a previous life, served as a police detective, mastering the delicate art of negotiating hostage situations. Retirement led me down a different path—teaching and writing—a journey that began with my first non-fiction book, which became an Amazon best-seller. That success ignited my passion for storytelling and introduced the world to my indomitable protagonist, FBI agent Jeannie Loomis. Believing that the ends justify the means, Jeannie has become the heart of a gripping 16-novel thriller series. My historical fiction script The Beautiful Beast was selected as a quarter-finalist in the 2025 PAGE competition. The Phantom Train script was selected in 2024… Go to bio
