Synopsis/Details
K.A.R.M.A. follows the story of several married couples who have their ups and downs and sometimes struggle to face the truth. In this mosaic storytelling, we follow the story of Angela and Lance Hayes, a couple in their late thirties who are both successful in their field of work. Although at first glance it seems like they present the image of a perfect marriage, it’s all but façade. Lance has had a mistress for a long time now, and he successfully manages to keep the affair a secret. Thus, Angela doesn’t notice the late come-ins, Lance’s mood swings and mystifications. On the other side, we follow the story of Faith, a writer, and Patrick, her wealthy and promiscuous husband who owns three car dealerships. They have two children, but they don’t try to keep their arguments behind their sight. Faith and Patrick constantly argue because of Patrick’s temper, and one time, he hits Faith, which is what seems to be the point of no return for her. Then, there is Nate and his wife Macy, who is Angela’s best friend. They are upper middle class African American couple, and they feel happy and fulfilled both in their careers and at their home. Thus, there is only one thing that troubles Nate – he is sexually harassed by his parole officer, Sandra, who haunts Nate at work and at his home later. And at last, there is this interesting homosexual couple – Miles and Derrick Garret, who have one child by a surrogate. Miles is a successful therapist, and Derrick is a musician. Miles is a good friend of Macy and Nate. One day, Faith meets a woman by accident, who sees the bruises on her face. She introduces herself as the founder of K.A.R.M.A., an organization specialized in marriage coaching. She then explains that K.A.R.M.A. stands for Keeping All Ruthless Men Aligned. Faith doesn’t seem to be into it at first, as it is a hard decision to make. In the meantime, Miles and Derrick have a huge argument, as Derrick feels like he is not supported by his husband. Later, the situation escalates to a point where Derrick doesn’t come home and spends the night with his ex-boyfriend. Angela discovers a shocking truth by accident – she catches her husband talking to his mistress in a heated conversation. Her life begins to change, such as the lives of Macy and Nate; when the parole officer disturbs Nate, it is too much of a burden for him to keep the secret. Macy learns about Nate’s troublesome relationship with Sandra. In an interesting turn of events, Faith learns that Patrick not only cheated on her, but he had another family for a decade. Feeling betrayed, she finally decides to reach out for the K.A.R.M.A. program. As destiny works in a mysterious way, all the unhappy women and the one unhappy gay man meet each other and decide to give their significant others to the K.A.R.M.A. training program. Soon, Lance, Patrick, Derrick and Nate find themselves in what seems to be the most unique, naïve, thrilling program for training husbands to be faithful in their marriages. In the end, they all come back as changed persons. Nate, Lance and Derrick feel like they are in their marriages for the first time, and it all feels like a happy end; even for Faith, who decided to leave Patrick with his other family.
