Synopsis/Details
When chef Ed Curtis loses his job after assaulting a crabby TV food critic who, on air, insults his cooking, he turns to stand-up comedy. His teacher, Stan Laffer, is a washed-up comedian who lives beneath the stage of Mirth, a rundown comedy club. Ed, his classmates, and Stan share a common problem: money. Together they hatch a plan to rob the waterfront branch of Lowlands Bank, which is despised by everyone in the community. Abner, a classmate and navy veteran suggests using the deck gun of a local tourist attraction, the USS Hayes, to blow up the bank's vault. The execution of the seemingly simple plan is beset with numerous improbable setbacks. Despite them, the novice robbers manage to fire the gun—but accidentally blow up Mirth. Serendipitously, the explosion reveals a hidden cache of parts of endangered species. Mirth's owner was operating the club as a front for trading in illegal goods. Ed, his fellow students and Stan are heralded as heroes. They parlay their new-found fame and raise money via crowd funding to reopen Mirth and launch their new careers.
