Synopsis/Details
Mary and her husband David argue about their 13-year old son Anthony. Anthony over-hears the argument and learns that he was rescued by David from a church doorstep when he was an infant. David and Mary are not his real parents. Shocked, Anthony runs away from home and goes to his old teacher’s home Mrs. Richardson and spends the night there. Next day and as Anthony prepares to leave, Mrs. Richardson gives him what she considers a lucky charm, it’s a frame that houses what looks like a mirror from ancient Egypt. Anthony heads to Venice Beach, where he takes up residence on the sand. Anthony playfully flashes the mirror at a small dog, and suddenly transforms into one himself, then quickly morphs back, he then flashes it at a seagull, and soon realizes that the mirror lets turn into any animal he shines it at. Meanwhile, Mrs. Richardson’s son, Mac, returns home to his house, and immediately goes through her stuff frantically, looking for the mirror, of which he apparently knew of it’s magical powers and had previously utilized to commit strange robberies. Mac fumes when he finds out his mother had given the mirror to Anthony and immediately goes looking for him. Anthony keeps experimenting with animal tricks. He goes to see Mary, the mother he loves so much, as a little bird, then later goes back to Mrs. Richardson and she warns him about Mac. Next day at Venice Beach, Anthony turns into a dog and chases a purse-stealing kid, gets it back and returns it to a beautiful woman named Kathryn, along with young Jenny. The women take Anthony to lunch as a thank you gesture. Kathryn opens up to Anthony and tells him if her son Richard was a live, he would’ve been as old as he is. She lost her baby during a trip to the mountains where it is thought he was eaten by mountain lions. Kathryn insists that Anthony stays in touch with her and gives him her card. Anthony wakes up the next day under a lifeguard tower only to find himself face to face with Mac, and as they struggle for the mirror, they are both arrested and are taken into the station, where Anthony turns into a dog and escapes with a K-9 unit, but later Mac finds him and chases him with a knife. Anthony falls off a building, but saves himself by turning himself into a Pigeon at the last minute before hitting the ground. Anthony starts working to earn money, and when he stumbles upon an abusive father, he turns into a roaring Lion and threatens the father, scaring him to death. Anthony turns into a Duck and spends the night in the park near a pond, but the duck is captured by a greedy man. Anthony barely rescues himself from the man’s two large Dobermans and hides out in the basement of the house, where he is shocked to find a group of homeless kids, including purse-stealer Justin. He learns that the man, Jack, recruits young homeless kids to go out and steal and at night he feeds them Ducks that he steals from the park. Anthony decides to rescue them. Jack suddenly enters and beats Justin as Anthony hides. The kids later hammer out the escape plan and Anthony advises them to leave him behind and run as fast as they could to the police. Anthony then turns into a German shepherd and faces off against the two Dobermans in something like an epic battle, under the shocked eyes of the kids. Anthony/Shepherd wins but is severely injured and is rushed to the hospital by Justin. The hospital calls Kathryn, when they find her card with Anthony. She rushes over but Justin and Anthony are gone. Anthony and Justin head back to Venice. They are both hungry and need to find a way to make money. Justin hustles a chess player with a wise-guy attitude and challenges him to a match played by Justin’s Chimp (Anthony)…and with all of Venice beach and the media watching, the Chimp wins the match and the wise guy begs for a rematch. Anthony uses the $100 they won to surprise his mother Mary by buying her the dress she always wanted and taking it to her. This is his first reunion with his mother, a very emotional reunion. Mary tells Anthony the story of how David found him, and shows him a necklace he had on as a baby-it’s an exact necklace, which was worn by Kathryn. Anthony is in complete shock. Anthony calls and leaves Kathryn a message. Andy, Anthony’s real uncle, and William, Kathryn’s driver, the two who originally planned Anthony’s kidnapping and death, hear the message and erase it, and then contact Mac, who is by now recruited by Andy to kill Anthony. Mac, with orders from Andy, tricks Anthony and Justin to meet at an abandoned building. Meanwhile, William breaks down and tells Kathryn the truth about Anthony being her son and the murder plan by Andy. Kathryn takes off running to that same building. Andy and Mac confront Anthony and Justin. Andy tells Anthony how he wanted him dead so he can have a free hand with his brother’s fortune; he then pulls out a gun. Anthony pretends to be reaching for his pocket for the mirror, Mac knows, so he jumps Anthony. But unknown to the bad guys is that it’s Justin who has the mirror and is about to turn into a Gorilla, Andy confronts him and as they struggle for the mirror, both suddenly turn to Gorillas and a savage fight begins, and ends with a clear victory by Justin. Mother Kathryn and son Anthony finally reunites, and as Anthony moves into his mother’s mansion, he takes in a few friends with him, including Justin and the homeless kids and his own parents David and Mary.
