After serving his town as sheriff for twenty-five years Harlo retires. A few months into his retirement two men arrive from the war tribunal looking to take Harlo back to Washington to face trial for war crimes.
The new sheriff delays their departure with Harlo waiting for the district judge to rule on the legality of the papers.
Harlo's friend the look preacher (and lawyer), Samuel comes to defend him.
The town is divided. Harlo maintained the law and made the town safe. But some people that lost family in the civil war cannot look past the allegations. There is a third group that believes that if Harlo has to die, he should be allowed to die in the town he loved and be buried with his late wife.
