During a drug bust on the Gulf Coast of Mexico, Nicola, a task force member is shot and killed. Back in California, Brenda, a lawyer, and Nicola's stepmother is informed of Nicola's death. Rather than sit and wait for the authorities to solve Nicola's murder. Brenda sets out to go and seek an old friends' help. A successful book author, Shelly Owens is giving a conference at a convention when Brenda approaches her with a question. Shelly quickly stops Brenda from being escorted out of the center and tells Shelly that Nicola is dead and needs her help. Brenda meets with her late husband's cousin, Hayley, and informs her about Nicola. Brenda sets out to find the person responsible. The trio of women make it to Cancun, Mexico, and get better acquainted with their surroundings. A resident, Ramon Santiago, takes a liking to Brenda and invites her to his party. Hayley becomes unsure about the plan and leaves. While at Ramon's party, Shelly is sexually assaulted but is saved by Brenda. The next day, Shelly meets a man named Miguel and goes out on a date with him. Not taking any chances, Brenda buys two guns and returns to Ramon's house and his last party before he leaves Mexico for good. Lola, a detective and Brenda's daughter. Calls and informs Brenda that someone has kidnapped Nicola's baby. Brenda confronts Ramon about Nicola's death but learns it was not him but Hayley that killed her. Shelly finds the baby in the laundry room, in Ramon's house while Lola has knocked Hayley unconscious. It is revealed that Ramon is the father of Nicola's baby. Hayley wakes up and shoots Ramon. Lola shoots Hayley before she can shoot her but is in shock at what she has done. Back in Las Vegas, Shelly returns to book conventions. While back in California, Brenda falls unconscious and learns that she has cancer. Shortly after, Brenda passes away. Shelly moves to California and takes custody of Nicola's baby. A surprise visit comes from Miguel, as he shows up at her doorstep but she learns that he was hired by Hayley to kill her and Brenda. Miguel gets into an altercation with Shelly but is arrested by Lola. Miguel later returns to the house to kill Shelly but is killed by Lola. Eighteen years pass, and Nicola's daughter, Angelica has grown up. Angelica celebrates her eighteenth birthday in Cancun and watches a video of her late mother. Nicola greets her and wishes her a happy life. Angelica returns and is greeted by Shelly and Lola at the airport. The three women leave the airport, feeling accomplished at having peace amongst each other.
