Widowed and single mother Ophelia moves into her new home. Settling in, she comes across a diary owned by a woman named Mary Jane. 1974, a teenage Mary Jane gives birth to a boy and names him Nicholas but soon discovers her son is going to have a rough time learning. With her encouragement, she bribes him with toys to get him to talk. Back in 1998, Ophelia works her nine to five job at a local diner. Suzie, a waitress and her best friend decide to go out later. While the babysitter, Alice, and her boyfriend, Troy, leaves the infant in the bathroom while they fool around. Ophelia returns an hour later to find her son unresponsive. An irresponsible Alice angers Ophelia with her idiotic comment and gets arrested for assaulting her. Bailed out by Suzie, Ophelia attempts to visits her infant son but is unable to due to her arrests. She returns home and to reading the diary. 1989, Mary Jane is working as a waitress, exotic dancer and does cocaine with her boyfriend, Ray. Knowing she's been a lousy mother to Nicholas, Mary Jane tries to call a truce with him, to which she passes out after falling into his room. Nicholas lets her sleep in his bedroom. Back in 1998, Feeling lost without her son and Troy offering an opportunity to make more money and regain custody. Ophelia finds the idea to be reckless. 1989, Mary Jane wakes up to her son, Nicholas, making her breakfast. Noticing his independence and letting him know that she loves him and not to forget it. This brings tears to his eyes.
